Oil light came on?

However oil change isn't due for another 2,000 miles and level is fine. What would cause this?

whiteyjfm 08-04-2013 12:03 PM

If the light comes on it is due for an oil change. Light is based on how Jeep has been driven, not milage.

the computer does do some math too, includes revolutions, time on motor. Whole bunch of mumbo jumbo lol the jeep is telling you its time instead of the odometer basically lol

Is this the oil light or oil change message? Two different meanings.

It came on at 3000 miles right?
And your planning to change at 5000?
If so then you need to reprogram it or just reset it and "Rememebr" when to change.

OP, please specify if you mean the "Low Oil Warning" light on the dashboard or the "Oil Change Indicator" in the EVIC below the speedo and tach.

Austin_FL 08-04-2013 12:45 PM

It was just "oil" message that came up next to ODO. I don't know if it glitched or I should take it in or what

Nope it's at 32k and isn't due for one til 34k

Austin_FL 08-04-2013 05:07 PM

Ok so it is the change oil light but why did it come on if I'm not due for one?

jmb6420 08-04-2013 05:57 PM

How do you know you are not due for an oil change? Have you read the manual to see what triggers the oil change light?

Because I know when it was done and it hasn't been 3000 miles...

Right, but what the guys were trying to tell you in the previous posts is that the oil change light comes on when the oil needs to be changed based on ENGINE USAGE not mileage, based on the jeep's computer being smarter than the odometer and KNOWING that it needs to be changed now.

Did you take it out wheeling, where you didn't go far, but worked the motor harder? Do you sit idling in traffic for extended periods of time? I'm not sure exactly what would cause it, but evidently there must have been something that triggered your computer to say it needs to be changed.

Oil changes are relatively inexpensive; isn't it worth the piece of mind to change it rather than take a chance?

Radioman 08-04-2013 07:59 PM

Another possibility is that the oil change indicator wasn't reset at the last oil change and now it is indicating is time for a change.

dharman07 08-04-2013 08:51 PM

I just changed my oil myself. How do I reset the indicator?

From page 315 of your owners manual:

1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position (do
not start the engine).
2. Fully depress the accelerator pedal slowly three times
within 10 seconds.
3. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF/LOCK position.

NOTE: If the indicator message illuminates when you
start the vehicle, the oil change indicator system did not
reset. If necessary, repeat this procedure.

p.s. It took about 2 minutes to download the 2013 owners manual in .pdf format from Jeep, search it for "oil change," and cut and paste your answer....

Read your owners manual!

I would guess the change oil light, seeing as we have 3 threads per day about it:rofl:

demarpaint 08-05-2013 06:32 AM

Up Hill Bill nailed it.

People don't know about resetting the OLM or forget to reset it when they change the oil. The OLM has no idea when you change the oil.

Select year and model. Save .pdf file to a place you can find it in a hurry... It's much handier than a paper manual, IMO. Very quick to search for just what you want..... That's how if found the correct info for you so fast. :thumb:
