Well there goes that...

Sorry for all the posts but tonight I was driving my yj ran fine better then ever was in second gear cause some jerk was going 20-25 mph on a 45 mph road and some guy ran us off the road and jeep shut off and tried to start it and nothing tried to coast start it and nothing tried to start it again and the valve cover blew right off what is wrong...what was wrong it had oil and everything other then the valve cover was plastic and had some cracks in it but the jeep still wont start without it on there what is wrong with it I am about done with cars/trucks :surrender:

1987Wrangler YJ 08-07-2013 11:33 PM

The valve cover blew off?! HAHA. well now is your excuse to get an alloy one. I'm guessing you have an '87 like myself? sounds like fumes built up in the engine (gas in the oil) and blew out through the cover. or crank case pressure. but I'm no mechanic.

dguire792 08-08-2013 12:06 AM

1990 and there's humor in this but I'm pissed beyond belief. And who's bright idea it was to put a plastic valve cover on needs to be slapped for being dumb. Pics

You can see the bolts that are still holding onto the remainder of the valve cover.

So the it wasn't turning over so I was going over everything electrical and pulled the spark plus and the second one from the back I found this... piston is trashed im guessing? But it looks like the tip of the spark plug just got shoved up into the glass park or whatever the rest of it is made out of?

jeepers29 08-08-2013 07:24 AM

If the piston made contact with the plug, then it is probably time for a rebuild at least. Something let loose inside there.

1987Wrangler YJ 08-08-2013 12:26 PM

that's an alloy cover. get a new set of pistons. and rebuild the head

1987Wrangler YJ 08-08-2013 12:35 PM

Get an alloy*

Well this is my DD so I am just going to buy a used engine and since I don't have much experience with pistons and all that jazz down there engine swap will be the easier way to go that's what I'm thinking at least.

Q. Would a 4.0 fit in there without any mods?

kywaterman 08-08-2013 05:12 PM

Nope. Lots different, mounts, trans, transfer, wiring, so on and so forth.... Can be done but its not a simple drop in replacement.

dguire792 08-08-2013 05:21 PM

Alright thought it wouldn't hurt to ask.

dguire792 08-08-2013 11:10 PM

Found the problem  and all the other pistons have metal shavings on top of them. :banghead:

OMG! Sorry man but I have to laugh! I've never seen that before. Well I guess it's safe to say you have some work to do.

dguire792 08-09-2013 09:54 PM

Also my gas tank has been leaking for a little while so while I'm out of a ride for a while I decided to pull it and fix it since money is really tight right now and I'll replace it eventually with a plastic one.

http://i1005.photobucket.com/albums/...gastank002.jpg

Yes that is gas just from getting it out with out it coming out of the filler or anything else both sides are like that.

And hopefully monday I have a engine to put it.

1987Wrangler YJ 08-09-2013 10:16 PM

What are you putting in it? put out the extra$ and put a 4.0 and ax15. OR a v8!

dguire792 08-09-2013 10:41 PM

Don't have the money...I just have the money to put another 2.5 in or I defiantly would.

1987Wrangler YJ 08-09-2013 10:59 PM

yeah man I hear ya. What are you putting in a rebuilt, used or new?

dguire792 08-09-2013 11:21 PM

Used one 70xxx miles on it mine had 154xxx

dguire792 08-11-2013 02:44 PM

Do you have to drain the transmission fluid when you do a motor swap?

n2trucking 08-11-2013 02:57 PM

duct tape fixes everything.

If I could use duct tape I would but there ain't no way that it would fix this problem.

dguire792 08-11-2013 09:10 PM

Fixed the gas tank temporarily until I have money to replace it, should I get a plastic one or metal? Also pulled the motor tonight took me like 5 min to pull it and 20 min to set up and it was the only thing I could think of and it worked easily!

All the rust and dirt is off the bottom with this pic but I do not have a pic of it bed lined which is what I did and some jb weld. All this is temporary!

The pull out.

Ingenious engine hoist right there.

Jerricho 08-12-2013 10:15 AM

Take this for what it's worth man, but if you are good enough to get the engine out with that much apparent ease you are certainly good enough to do a piston swap/head rebuild.

dguire792 08-12-2013 10:24 AM

@incizion thanks haha I thought so myself and @Jerricho well I don't have the time and money to do that right now cause I am starting college here soon and I need a ride back and forth.

Q. Would a fuel injected 2.5 work with mine that was set up to be carbed?

dguire792 08-21-2013 10:00 PM

Finally got a new engine to replace it so hopefully if everything goes to plan it will be in by this Sunday! I'll post more pics also of everything.

dguire792 08-26-2013 11:33 PM

So the new motor is in after I got it like two days ago and the starter is the only thing that runs and it just clicks opinions to why it wont turn over? And I just plugged the spark plug wires just guessing and I also had to modify two wires leading to the alternator. And I also have no clutch it just goes to the floor....any suggestions? Ill post pics tomorrow of everything.

c5wagner 08-27-2013 12:21 AM

I'm guessing a ground is why it won't turn over, you could also try taking a rubber mallet to the starter while someone else is trying to turn it over. If it turns over, it means the starter is bad. As for the clutch, make sure it has fluid and isn't leaking and try bleeding it if needed. Please forgive me but this thread is the funniest thing I've seen in a while.
