Wheel backspace issue with 3 inch lift Help
 
Hello Everyone,

So I am finally pulling the trigger on a Teraflex 3 inch lift for my 2013 Rubicon Unlimited. The one question I have is that Teraflex is telling me that I cant use my stock wheels due to the fact that they have a 5.1 backspace and that Teraflex says that I need 4.5 or less. Where I am confused is that the AEV wheels also have a 5.1 backspace. The only thing that I can think of is that they reversed the tie rod extensions from being on the outside to the inside. I am trying to save on funds and if I can get by with my factory wheels that I can throw 35s on that would be ideal...

Anyone have any ideas ...

Stock is like 6.25... Not 5.1
But yes ... You can run the rear sway bar links on the inside for clearance.

Just get some wheel spacers like TurbineGuy said and you will be all set.

ya .. been reading about spacers and its not the way I want to go ... I know some people like them ... Kjeeper10 thank you for mentioning that I can run them on the inside .. any known issues running them on the inside?

Maybe we can help...

Have you thought about running just a cheap wheel? That could solve the issue as well. Wheel spacers are not a bad idea. Just make sure you get ones that are lug and hub centric like the Spidertrax:

Whoever you talked to at TF is wrong. Your stock wheel has a 6.25" backspace. If you use a 1.5" spacer that will effectivly change it to 4.75 which is common with your typical 8 wide aftermarket wheel.
As long as you get a quality spacer (as stated) and make sure it's torqued properly (including rechecking it after about 500 miles or so) you will not have any of the "it's going to fall off" problems that apparently so many think is a issue.
In my opinion (others too) think the new Rubi wheels look great with 35s and there are a number of those here that have gone that route.

+44 offset on a 7.5 wide wheel = 6.0 Backspacing.
AEV wheels are 5.2 BS
35/10.5/17 (SSR) will not need wheel spacers.
Install the lift and tires and THEN make the determination what stuff is needed.

What I am trying to avoid is doing the lift this weekend and then saying well crap the tire is rubbing on the sway bar extension link. And now I can't drive my daily driver.

"Hello boss can't come in today I lifted my jeep and I can't drive it now". Lol

Get wheel adapters, here at my shop we install the 1.25's or 1.5" depending on the preference of the client.

Two things- If the SB end links are adjustable, lower them enough to get inside the upper part of the wheel or drive it until spacers or aftermarket wheels are installed

Another option is buy your 35s with an inexpensive wheel(can find nice ones at DTD for around $100-$120. That way you sell your takeoff wheels and tires complete much easier and for more money to offset the cost of the wheels a bit or entirely. Also you save a decent chunk of change on the dismounting of the stock tires and the re-mounting of the new 35s. Just a thought!! And don't let anyone tell you that you NEED tpms sensors!! LOL

Oh there are certainly some fruitcakes out there for sure but reasonable people know their actual value versus price paid...I sold mine in about 2 weeks for $600...recouped every dollar for my new wheels!! Yeehaa
