What is the Islander

I have picked up the 2010 JK Islander edition. My first Jeep. As I learn more, I realize that it has Rubi shocks on it (Red). I had heard of people putting on the leveling kit to level out their rigs, but mine sits level and it is also on it's stock 17' rims. I saw some of the build sheet when I bought it and it had the lower gears with Dana 44 rear and Dana 30 front. So it's not a Rubi, or a Sport, or a Saraha.... What is it closest to???

Rock_Crusher 08-22-2013 08:34 AM

Saraha????? Sahara

panthermark 08-22-2013 08:57 AM

It is a Sport with a Rubi shocks and wheels.

Rock_Crusher 08-22-2013 09:43 AM

Would it have the Rubi springs also?

legitposter 08-22-2013 09:50 AM

Springs depend on the features (tow package, 4 door, hard top, etc)

So the islander edition is a real thing? I know my dealer has silly "JK crawler" editions on its lot.

Please post pics. I don't know what functionally the Islander offers, but I always thought they were very, very cool looking. I think I even posted a thread dedicated to my love of Islanders at one point.

I saw one the other day, I love the early 80s style graphics.

My neighbor at work LOVES, LOVES, LOVES the YJ Islander... He looked one up on Craigslist last week, and I thought I had him convinced to buy it. He called the logo an "80's style Karate Kid sunset".....

It is like a running joke on our team and we all send each other this pic.

For those that want to see a pic of an Islander....
There is a YJ Islander, and a JK Islander

Yes, the Islander package was a real thing for the JK, kinda like the Mountain package, the Mojave package, and the 70th Annv Edition.

I know, it is so awesome. It is my dream to one day see this Jeep towing this bike with omg this girl behind the wheel.

panthermark 08-22-2013 10:11 AM

^No, not those 80's style graphics...

The "original" Islander with the sweet sunset graphics...

I will try to get more pictures. When I bought it it only had 17,000 miles on it. It had the original tires and rims on it because the first owner had swapped them out for hwy tires and never ran the BFG muds. He had also swapped out the seats for ones he had and had never used the factory seats (guess he didn't like the blue). Then the rig sat mostly in his garage. It was truly "like new" condition. I will try to get more pictures of Tiki Bob....

I hope the original owner got a good deal on it, because if he swapped out the seats and wheels, he basically paid a lot of extra money for Tiki Bob stickers and Rubi shocks. But it sounds like a sweet deal for you...

Every time I see the Islander concept Tiki, I can't help but think of this:

I was driving my Corvette from my cottage to a restaurant (well OK, to a bar) on Sanibel Island back in 1991 when I saw my first Islander parked alongside the road...no doors, no top. I knew in an instant that the 'Vette was history and I'm now on my fourth Wrangler.
No looking back!
