changing trans fluids
 
After ready many posts in regards to switching to tranny syn fluid, I put therig up on the ramps, crawled underneath, and thought I had found the correct drain and filler holes, but apparently not :-( I saw two plugs at the end of the tranny AX15, near where the speedo connects, drained the bottom plug , not much came out, maybe a quart, and the I pumped in 2qts or Mobile One 10W30 syn into it. It was on the ramps, so it started to come out after two qts, so I put it down flat, and thought I could fill it the rest of the way with the total 3.5qts it called for, no way :-( Then I looked closer at the repair manual, and noticed it said the drain plug was on the BOTTOM, I had drained one that was on the back. and had filled it through a plug that was on the back above the plug I used to drain it with. So, I find I've drained and filled some part of the tranny that isn't the plugs I was looking for. Anyone tell me what part I actually drained and filled ? I can send a pic if needed.....

You drained and filled the transfer case, which normally takes ATF fluid.

The AX15 has a drain on the bottom passenger side and the fill hole on the driver's side

It looked like auto trans fluid when I drained it. I guess it was :facepalm: So I guess I'll have to drain the oil I put in it, and reinstall the ATF......crap ! And thanks for the pics,:thumb: that clarifies everything. I crawled underneath and it looks like the plug where the oil goes in is an allen (?) wrench type fitting. I don't have that big of allen wrench so I guess I'll have to buy one. It doesn't say anything about size of wrench needed in the repair manual..This Haynes manual isn't too good :-(

The fill hole looks like it takes a allen wrench. Do you happen to know what size it is ?

I'm not familiar with the AX15. But on my Ax5 all the Allen key plugs are not to be removed! The full plug is another plug that looks exactly like the drain plug. And another thing it's to difficult (unless the trans is on the ground) to fill the trans at the fill plug. I suggest to take the 10 min to remove the boot and shifter assembly and fill from the top.

I wonder what idiot designed that :pullinghair: I wonder what the lube service companies do when they do a oil/lube job ? To put a plug in a un-assessable place was a real half wit boner :-(

The shops usually have air pressure lube guns. That way is easy too, but yes definitely a half wit idiot design.

So, do you know what the allen plugs are used for ? Must have a use, or they wouldn't be there . :)

External trans maintenance if what I don't know I would have to look in the manual but that us what they are used for.

Some trannys they use the when they are stuck in a gear.

When fikling the top hole I usually resort to a hose connected to a sports water bottle, the kind you squeeze to make the water come out with the right angle built in straw.

This or they sell hand pumps and hose that fit over the oil bottles. Stick the hose in the fill hole and pump till it starts coming out.

After crawling under there again today, I don't find any drain or fill holes such as you have pictured, so I guess I must have another model of tranny other than the AX15 :pullinghair:
