Jk question

Im looking at picking up a 2010ish wrangler unlimited, probably a sport or maybe sahara.

I really like the look of the 2013 rubicon unlimited. My question is, aesthetically they are very similar. Is there anything outside of wheels and tires that make them much different on the outside anyway? Any different ride height, wheel offset etc? I know the rubicon has much better off road parts, but I wont need that. My thought is pick up a slightly older sport and throw the 2013 rubicon wheel and tire package on it and call it good

Well.. 2012 and 2013 have the new engine... thats the biggest difference

You probably want a 2012 or newer. Big difference in the motor and tranny. The interior was updated in 2011. Minor changes in larger windows on the hardtop (2012 maybe).

They are all good, I have/had a few of them (an 08, 10, 12, 13, 13, and 14). The 5 speed auto and 3.6 (starting in '12) makes it a more enjoyable daily driver.

They also changed the interior in 2011... But as far as axles and body wise I don't believe there were any changes front the 07's

Plus the money spend on a used normally isnt big enough of a difference to a baseline sport jk or jku...

panthermark 08-31-2013 11:15 PM

From the outside?

In 2010 (I think) the hardtop windows got slightly larger.
In 2011 painted tops were offered
In 2013 the Sahara and Rubi got different wheels
MId 2013, pinch seams were trimmed from the factory (hard to see anyway)
In 2014 clear front turn signals

Basically, they all look the same unless you know the finer details of Wranglers. It is probably easier to tell the year of a JK by the color (Unless it is black, white, flame red, or bright silver).

The rubicon versions have stiffer springs and gas shocks with 17" mud tires giving it a different stance... Buy yourself some stock rubicon springs mud tires and aesthetically they will look the same.

So stiffer springs will do it... If you look on ebay, Craig's list, you can find a set of 10th anniversary springs and shocks for around 175.00, that will lift the front a little more reducing the rake. That's my next project!

There really is no such thing as Rubicon springs. There really isn't any rhyme or reason that anyone has been able to determine as to what springs get installed in each model. There is a thread on here somewhere listing all the different springs offered, along with part numbers though. You can buy new springs at your local parts department or online, or you could buy used from ebay or craigslist.

Cool thanks for the info!

I'm gonna start with the wheels and see what happens, springs next if needed

So just to confirm, the 2013 rubicon doesnt have a lift from the factory? Same ride height outside wheels/tires as the sport and sahara?

No, the Sahara has the tallest stock ground clearance of the three.

Not for Unlimiteds, according to Jeep (Jeep - Model Specifications), or most other sources:

Attachment 332089

2-door Saharas are spec'ed at 0.1 inch higher clearance than Rubis.... go figure??

Of course, it's just due to stock tire size. Changing wheels/tires throws all that out the window....

Ride height (not ground clearance) is effected most by spring rating. Nobody has been able to figure out how Jeep chooses spring rates for any one Jeep. But there is a pretty significant difference between those with the lowest spring ratings and the highest. Stock Rubis usually seem to look taller, to me anyway....

All I have to add is that the hardtop windows got bigger with the 2012.

I think you answered your own question right there. If to you they look very similar and you don't want to offroad, I don't see any reason to justify the extra cash on a Rubicon.

For 2010 vs a newer model, I'd suggest checking out the interior, which got a make over in 2011. Personally I think the new interior is MUCH nicer, but I'm sure others disagree. :)

Late reply but, yes, even the JKU Sahara has a higher ground clearance than the JKU Rubicon:
