99 tj stalls occasionally when you get off the gas

Hi all. This is my first post and my first jeep so forgive me if u make/say some amateur stuff.
So it is a 99 tj Sahara 4.0 and done 80k kms and by the looks all in the road. My problem is that every now and then ( 5 times in the last 2 weeks) it will stall when I get off the has to pull up at an intersection or similar. It starts again no worries and seems to run fine. The may be a hardly noticeable miss at idle but am unsure. The plugs are good and the leads look to be pretty new too.
If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated, Thanks

Dirty throttle body.

Lawsome 09-01-2013 03:55 AM

So just give it a good clean with what exactly? any special product or degreaser or what. Thanks

Caiden07 09-01-2013 05:29 AM

If cleaning TB don't work maybe bad TPS.

Lawsome 09-01-2013 05:45 AM

I'll try the free option first and if cleaning tb not successful I'll have to try tps.
Thanks for the help. I need all I can get

louczar 09-01-2013 09:21 AM

I did my TB a few days ago. Do it right and remove it to clean it. clean the IAC while at it. Go to the auto parts store and buy a can of TB cleaner. I bought another gasket just in case. 4 bolts to remove TB. 2 torx to remove the IAC.

I used an old tooth brush because mine was so nasty and probably at least 10-15 q tips to reach where the tooth brush couldn't. Damn near used the whole can of cleaner before it was clean. there are lots of posts on cleaning it

Lawsome 09-01-2013 03:41 PM

Ok thanks for that, I'll give it a go this weekend. Fingers crossed a good clean sorts it out.

Notoriously_rob 09-01-2013 03:43 PM

I cleaned mine and it didnt work well so i bought a new one and a new tps---still didnt work.... ;(

Lawsome 09-01-2013 06:19 PM

So have you not found the problem yet?

Notoriously_rob 09-01-2013 06:20 PM

Nope..

Lawsome 09-06-2013 10:42 PM

Ok do have now removed and cleaned the TB and the IAC and still have the same problem. It's like it's getting to much has or no ignition or something because it's going fine then you give it some gas and it bogs down then stutters then away she goes. Checked plugs and they look to be alright from what I can tell (I'm no mechanic though). Just wondering what my next move should be. I think I'll figure out how to test the TBS next of anyone has some basic instruction on how to preform this test it would be greatly appreciated otherwise I'll just wing it.

On another note. Does anyone know where I can find a good factory replacement aluminium radiator for a 1998 4.0 wrangler sahara automatic. The trick is I need it sent to new Zealand Thanks for any help you can give me

Notoriously_rob 09-08-2013 06:21 AM

just changed my map sensor (new iac, tps beforehand). Just drove it around the block and it idles a lil lower than it used to, maybe like 100 or so rpms, just below the line, and it didnt really bob up and down when i pushed in the clutch to go to neutral and slow down for a light. Also checked the gap on all my plugs- highest was .037 vice .035 so i think i was close to perfect lol.

See where this goes.

Lawsome 09-08-2013 06:36 AM

Thanks I will . I'll plug it in and see what codes if any this week, hopefully this will shed some light on my problem.
I started it up today after having driven it for 20mins and she was idling rough almost like it was missingand I could smell gas. I also had a small amount of water come from the exhaust, is this normal.
I'll see what codes it comes back with and I'm gonna try test the tps also before I replace it as I can't afford to replace things expecially if they're not broken.

Thanks for help

Notoriously_rob 09-08-2013 06:43 AM

i would say that that is condensation.

Understand that- i was not happy with buying tps iac and map sensor all at the same time but i was getting frustrated...need this jeep to be reliable as my daily driver

Lawsome 09-08-2013 02:59 PM

I do understand and am very close to buying them all myself out of frustration , the only reason I haven't yet is because I have to get them sent from the US and am having trouble finding somewhere that has them all and will send them at a reasonable price. The jeep is my girlfriends daily driver and all I want is for it to be reliable too. If you figure it out let me know and I'll do the same.

Notoriously_rob 09-08-2013 03:30 PM

Rockauto or quadratec

Lawsome 09-08-2013 03:38 PM

Thanks, I'll check them out

Notoriously_rob 09-08-2013 03:51 PM

Ps- it is still bobbing up and down...it did it again this morning on the way to the local hardware store...didnt cut off or idle rough, just bobbed up and down when i was slowing down for a turn

Lawsome 09-11-2013 04:32 AM

So I check for fault codes today and nothing. It did through one but that was from when I unplugged the MAP sensor to force it to through a code just to check the OBD was working.
So I guess it's time to start changing old stuff for new. I have a feeling that it is the o2 sensor(s) based on what it has been doing and what others have found has worked for them so that's the first thing I'll replace and I'll test the TPS at the same time.
If anybody has any other ideas that may help or have had similar problems and have resolved them please let me know as you're input would be greatly appreciated.
I'll let you know how I get on

Notoriously_rob 09-11-2013 08:08 AM

Already changes front o2 sensor with ntk- back one was good looking in my opinion...
Im stumped on this one as well

Just tested mine. Buy an elm 327 bluetooth adapter, download the diagnostic software to your phone. The throttle % should smoothly go from about 11% to 73% at full throttle. (11 $ on amazon for the bluetooth and mine was bad, started at 13% and joltingly went to 35%)

Lawsome 09-11-2013 03:19 PM

Funny you say that as I brought one yesterday and downloaded Torque pro. I'll check out the throttle and see if it's smooth like you say it should. What does it mean if it's not. What do you replace is it the TPS

pyrilampes 09-11-2013 03:32 PM

Yes. Tps. If you buy from advance auto, buy online from their website and you get 15% off. I had no codes thrown and now I have a lot more power and can use 6 gear on the highway. 31s with 3.07 gears

Lawsome 09-11-2013 03:43 PM

Sounds good thanks for that. I do have a new tps on the way along with o2 sensors which I understand need replacing now and then anyway so thought I'd do them at the same time. I'll test the throttle with the OBD2 before I put the new tps in to see if there is a problem. Thanks again

Lawsome 10-21-2013 01:38 AM

Ok so it has taken me some time to get my new parts in and thought I'd let you all know how I got on. So I replaced the TPS first and it still bogged down. I then replaced the MAP sensor but it still bogged down so I then replaced the IAC and I thought that sorted it out but then it began to stutter and big down when accelerating again within the first couple of outings. I have just finished replacing the upstream and downstream o2 sensors and haven't taken the jeep for a run yet but hopefully that should have sorted it.
My next step would be the ignition coil if I still have the same problem but am open to any other suggestion if anyone has had the same problem and managed to get it sorted it would be much appreciated.

I'll let you know how I get on

mudmagnet63 10-21-2013 08:10 AM

I had a vacuum leak on mine causing a similar problem. I found a line unhooked under the battery tray that is goes to a vacuum resiviour.

Lawsome 10-21-2013 01:48 PM

Thanks ink check that out also

Lawsome 10-21-2013 02:34 PM

Ha ha I meant I'll check it out

Lawsome 10-25-2013 05:04 AM

So I checked for vacuum leaks and couldn't find anything obvious so went ahead and installed new upstream and downstream oxygen sensors, I was told not to use bosch so used denso sensors instead. Since I replaced them I have had the jeep out only twice but run perfectly both times, it even idled a little lower and smoother, so I think this may have fixed my problem but won't know for sure until I use it a few more times so fingers crossed and will let you know how I get on.
Thanks to everyone for your input
