Hard to find bolts

Hello everyone.
After many years of dreaming of a Jeep Rubicon
I finally am the proud owner of one. Well to be
honest the bank owns it and if everything goes
well it will be all mine in 72 months. OUCH!
My Jeep did not come with the tow package.
I did however get lucky and I found a factory
receiver hitch on my local Craigslist. It is in
brand new shape not a scratch on it. My problem
is it did not come with the bolts and I'm having
a hell of a time finding them. Mopar doesn't list
just the bolts, you have to buy the whole kit.
I've tried local bolt and hardware dealers with
no luck. I'm hoping to find someone that either
has some bolts or knows where I can find them.
Any help is welcome. Thank you, Steve.

I would try places like U-Haul or Tractor Supply Co. I would think anyplace that sells hitches/receivers or trailers should be able to help you out

You will find that most anything you try to buy from Mopar they will say"SORRY YOU CANT GET JUST THAT YOU HAVE TO BUY THE WHOLE THING"!!! For example I just installed KC LITES and a CB Radio and needed the rubber plug that the third brakelight wire runs through, the stealership told me I had to buy the whole third brakelight kit.I also tried to buy the little braket on the inside driversside under the hood that holds the relays, you will see there is a vacant spot on the passenger side and that is where I mounted the relays and fuses for the KCs they said I had to buy the WHOLE relay assembly! What a total joke.I ended up making a duplicate bracket and found rubber plugs at LOWES.We do not have junkyards around here but maybe you do so you might find these simple but hard to find items! Also they would not share the manufacturer names either.

tractor supply, lowes, home depot, etc.

I'm wondering how you were unable to find them, you dont need anything special. It's just a bolt. I'm going to go ahead and assume it's a 9/16" that you need. be sure and get grade 8!

I believe 9/16 is a tad big and you may need to ream some holes. It depends on the JK and the configuration of the plate inside the crossmember. When I used 1/2 bolts to install my rear bumper only 2 went fine through the crossmember holes (where the factory hitch attaches). I had to ream the other two so they would go through.

Grade 8 bolts are cheap anyways, and you only need 4. Now the length is 4.5". Yoy could try 1/2 x 4.5 bolts and then go from there. Homedepot sometimes has 1/2 grade 8 bolts as well as lowes. Fastenal.com is a good online source. Boltdepot.com and nutsandbolts.com also sell grade 8.

Mcmaster.com is always an option. Your order usually shows up next day with regular shipping.

Do a Google search for a local fastener store, I have one local called Pyramid fasteners and they have anything you can imagine.

I know the size, I was able to figure that out at a local nut and bolt
store. The size is metric, 12mm x 1.5 thread pitch X 110mm long.
The store I was at had some but they weren't a grade 8. They were
grade 8.9 metric which is less than grade 8 US. To be safe I want
grade 10.9 metric which is equal to grade 8 US. I called all kinds of
different places with no luck. Finally found a parts guy at a local
Jeep dealer that was able to get the bolts without buying the hitch.
I can buy them for 25 bucks a bolt.:puke:No thanks. Talked to a
local U haul dealer and they think they can get me some. From Mopar
the hitch with bolts costs anywhere from 150 to 200 bucks depending
on the dealer. I payed 25 bucks for the hitch and it's in new condition.
If it becomes too much of a pain I will either cut off the current bolts
on the hitch and weld on some US standard nuts, or rethread the current
bolts to fit a US standard bolt. Didn't realize it was going to be this
hard to get 4 bolts.

Fastenal doesn't have the flange bolt, but they have a non-flange bolt...

Maybe combine it with a washer...

here you go.

Metric hex bolts, Stainless steel 18-8, 12mm x 1.75mm x 110mm - Bolt Depot

The pitch is different but that doesn't matter as long as you get the nut with the same pitch. I buy bolts from this site all the time. They are cheap, good and fast.

Go to Pep Boys. They have everything. Including zombie stickers :)

the MOPAR hitch has the nuts built in/welded to the hitch, so the bolt has to be perfect.

I think you are making it harder on yourself. I take it the hitch has nuts welded to the back? You can't just take that into a home depot and find the bolt that works?

Edit: Oops, wrong pitch for you... It is an oddball, isn't it.

I have taken it to a real hardware store that has just about
every bolt you can think of. That's how I found out the size
is 12mm x 1.5 x 110mm. They had some but they were too
weak of a grade bolt for a hitch. Home depot doesn't even
have 12mm bolts with a 1.5 thread pitch. On my way to the
local U Haul, they seem to think they can get me what I need.
If worse comes to worse I'll grind off the old bolts and have
some welded on that are a more common thread.

Just my two cents .but it can find out who makes the hitch for mopar .(like rugged ridge) mabey you can call them and get the bolts from them

Jstraw 09-06-2013 12:55 AM

Go to a jeep dealer. They will sell just the bolts, usually they come in pairs and they just don't tell you.
