My son is looking at buying an 87 Cherokee. I'm a Wranagler guy and could use some advice on a Cherokee. It has a 4.0L, Dana 44 rear, AMX 15 transmission. It seems to start a little hard, but it's only $1000. Are there any issues with this year or anything I should beware of?

He's hoping to buy a fixer-upper. He's in the Army Reserve and will be deploying soon. I'm planning on fixing it up while he's gone.:punk:

If you happen to find another XJ in that year range the two main problems I had with my 89 was the renix set up, As far as the cooling ststem is a closed system and was bad about leaking and running hot. But the NAXJA site the turd :D mentioned has several fixes for that. Another thing was the throttle position sensor was very sensitive to moisture and will play out easily if even remotely wet. other than that I miss that 'ol XJ. If going over seas then we wish him Good Luck and be safe.

I own a 89 cherokee limited with 4.0 H.O. and a 93 wrangler with a 4.0 H.O. and they both seem to start a little hard. But hey, they start,,and they go,, heh-heh

XJ's are nice. Stay away from the GM v6 and get either version of the 4.0L. I hope to be getting another XJ at some point.
