09 JK with odd squeal or whistle 1500-2000 rpm

Hello all,
This is my first post and so far I love the forum. I just bought an 09 wrangler X with S package this past Saturday with a 6 speed manual. I noticed on a couple warm days with the windows down that I hear a squeal or whistle like sound with light acceleration between 1500 & 2000 RPM. I have no idea where it is coming from. Dealing wants to put a new intake manifold on it, I am scared it might be the tranny after reading a couple of the TSBs out there. Best description is a like a brake squeal when they need replaced for a just a second or two.

Any opinions on what this coule be? Or similar experiences. I would love to get some advice this is driving me crazy just a little over 600 miles on it.

i have the same noise when i hit the gas too. i hear it at higher rmps too but you have to really listen for it. if you figure it out let me know cause it is really annoying. i havnt taken it to the dealership yet but if they fix it on yours i will have them do it for mine to. i think you might be right about the tranny thing only because the only people i have found with this problem have said they had the 6 speed

Yeah, I am taking it in tomorrow so they can check it out. I showed them the TSB for TO bearing and clutch disc, and they still want to use chasis ears and try to locate the noise.

If it does turn out to be the clutch think I should have them fix it right away or wait for a couple thousand miles as it only has 500 on it now?

if they will change it under warranty might as well let them do it right

:mad:Dealer can not reproduce the sound!!!!!

Took the service manager on a test drive with it obvious to anyone and he swears he can't hear it!!!!

I must have super human hearing. Guess I will just drive it till something breaks.:banghead:

My first 08 JK Sahara Unlimited 6 speed had a grabby clutch. At first, I thought it was me because it had been seven years since I had driven a standard. I kept stalling the damn thing and I figured I would eventually get my foot coordinated. Well, I think two things happened. My foot got better and whatever was causing the problem eventually settled out somewhere between 7,000 and 14,000 miles. When that one went back to Chrysler and I got my 08 JK Sahara Rubicon six speed, the clutch was good from the git go. No grabbiness. Hope yours works itself out for your sake. I wonder if the frequency is high enough that it is out of the hearing range of the dealership guy. Some of my students complain about screaching noises coming from their monitors and I'm sure they can hear it but I can't hear it one bit. The other week, I plugged in one of those bug repellent thingamabobs made by black and decker that is suppose to drive the bugs and rodents crazy and out of the house. My son who is thirteen said wow dad can't you hear that noise? I wonder if it will eventually drive him out of the house?...might be useful when he turns 18. :D Just kidding. But you get my meaning. He can hear it and I couldn't. Whatever it is I hope it isn't bad.

The squeal is the air passing through the throttle body at 1500 to 2000 RPM's. They are well aware of the issue. If you add one of the throttle body spacers that are advertised it will eliminate the noise. They cost about 100.00 and may add a little HP. It is more obvious in the automatics than the manuel transmissions. I have an 08 wrangler, same issue. Many dealers they all say they can't hear it. Wonder why they are going out of business?

Can you hear me now?

You are going bankrupt.....

HOPE & CHANGE IS RINGING IN MY EARS :D :D :D

I think we kind of came to that conclusion in a different thread. Most owners report no noise at that RPM including both of my 08s. So if it is only happening in a few, then why? If they know about it, why wouldn't they try and find the source. Under warranty why would anybody spend 100.00 for a throttle body spacer to fix a warranty issue? And lastly what Andy said in the above post.

Customer service is not one of Chrysler's strong points. Have you called their customer service line lately? A few days ago I had a question and I got some roggie that sounded like he was from India and I could barely make out what he was saying. I kept having to ask him to repeat. Pretty frustrating when trying to work out a problem with your new car. Was the Indian call center part of the bailout plan?
