has anyone ever moved their driver seat back so there is more clearance for the knees?im tall and if i have the seat all the way back and sit up straight i may have 1.5" between lower steering wheel cover and knees.if so can you give me a pic and description of what was done.

thanks,
steve

I don't know about the tj, but there is 3-4 inches of room behind my driver's seat before the tub raises to the back level. I would think that you could just remove the seat, drill new holes and bolt it back in about 2-3 inches further back. This might interfere if you are using a windjammer, and your seat may no longer recline, but it would give you a little more leg room. It would also make it hard on anyone using the rear seat, since there is not much room there anyway.
You could always replace your steering column with something shorter?!

im 6'2 and i fit fine... the only problem i have is my left shin hittin underneath the dash, and my right knee hits the rear defroster button occasionally...

I have never done this before but You might be able to have a good machine shop make a set of offset brackets to reposition the mounting holes. Tell the machinist what you are trying to do and they usually will look at the part and draw up a plan. I would think if you go this route then the seat would sit higher but not much. Depending on how much room you have on the seat slider you also might be able to oblong the holes enough to get some room. But this would weaken the slider I would think.

Just a couple of ideas to add to the list, I am tall also but I have the legroom in my TJ, at least when there is noone in the back seat.;)

i can drill new holes for the front bolts but the back 2 have no nuts showing underneath.i may have to drill thru 2 layers of sheetmetal to get new nuts and bolts in the back.my rt knee hits lower panel once in awhile.

Hmmm well, I'm 6' 6", and I fit pretty well... The only thing I wish i had was tilt on my steering wheel... I've just come to realize that this world just wasn't built for us tall guys...

mrbigjeep 09-05-2006 08:29 PM

oh wow, you beat us all! thats pretty darn tall!

rebelBullDawg325 09-05-2006 09:24 PM

yea, the tilt would work for me if i had it, but i dont, so i was wondering if i could lower my seat
