Spacer question
 
Hello ive been thinking of getting some spacer for my wheels and had a couple questions.

How do they install, do you just remove the wheel slide it on and reinstall the tire? Or do I have to adjust my brakes any? I've got a 00 wrangler sport. And how would 2 inch spacer affect on road driving would they make a diifference. Thanks for the advice

Are you talking about wheel spacers to move your tire and wheel further out from the wheelwell? I'm a little confused because you also mentioned 2" which is more associated with a budget suspension lift and not wheel spacers which should never approach 2" for safety reasons.

Yeah wheel spacers. I have a yamaha rhino and they recently put on two inch spacers in the rear for better stabability for free. And was thinking about doing this for my jeep.

two inches is quite much for wheel spacers, i dont think you'll have much thread on the studs, to be safe anyway

Do what I did, instead of wheel spacers treat yourself to some new rims with 3.75-4" of backspacing, that will push your tires out a little further. I bought some Black Cragar Soft 8's for less than $50 each. So for less than $200 total you can have new rims and a different look.

2" is excessive for a Jeep. And for what 1" wheel spacers cost, you can darned near buy new wheels with reduced backspacing that do the same thing.

how will spacers affect the stability of the jeep? I was thinking of putting on spacers also to widen the stance and make the jeep a lil more stable. Am I thinking along the rite lines here?

thats what i was thinking, more stable. but now ill probabley get wheels with more backspacing

As I said above, if you want the wheels to protrude more, you want the wheels less backspacing, not more. The more backspacing, the more into the wheel well the wheel is positioned. Wheels with 4.5" of backspacing will stick out 1" further than wheels with 5.5" (as a factory wheel has) backspacing.

So far as stability goes, the Jeep is already stable when you compare it to the older much narrower wheelbase CJs. As your Jeep gets taller, a little more width can be desireable but too often, I see a Jeep that is barely or not lifted at all with wheels that stick way out and at least to me, that just makes it look like a high schooler's Jeep or a pimp-mobile. :)

I think the typical Jeep wheel spacers are 1.25" (the length of the wheel's studs.) Yes, low rider shops have thin spacers that just slip over the studs, but they are thin, maybe 3/8"? They are dangerous, they crack and fall off, then you have a loose wheel!

The 1.25" spacers - they slide over the studs, then you put the lugnuts on. Torquing them to specs is critical. The recessed lugnuts hold the spacer onto the hub.
The spacers also have a set of studs for the wheel to mount on.

Yes, they give a slightly wider stance, that will add a little stability.

But in the front they also increase Scrub Radius, so the wheels tend to follow cracks and bumps more too - so you could say that increases instability.

Rrich brings up a very good point about the increased Scrub Radius. Think of Scrub Radius this way... when the wheel is centered over the pivot point the wheel turns left or right around, the tire pivots about that point when you turn left or right. That condition has a zero Scrub Radius.

But if your wheel has reduced backspacing which positions the wheel and tire assembly outboard of that point, the tire instead swings through an arc when you're turning left or right. If that doesn't give you a clear picture of what we're talking about, visualize the vehicle up on a rack. Install 12" spacers between the wheel and brake rotor. Then picture how the tire and wheel would be swinging in an arc centered around the knuckle on the axle as you turned the steering wheel left/right.

A slightly increased Scrub Radius isn't too bad but there's a point when it easily becomes excessive... which is only to say that it's not all good when the tires protrude more. :)

I run 2" spacers on my "TRAIL RIG ONLY", but I wouldn't suggest it on a daily driven rig. There's just too much of a chance that something can come loose and loose a wheel on the road. If installed properly they can be maintenance free, but on an internet forum I have no idea if the person installing will do a quality job so I just don't recommend it. :D
