Gas tank capacity

Any of you know if all TJ's had a 19 gallon tank, but the filler hose was longer on some, making them 15 gallons, or if they actually had two different size tanks? Specifically 97. I want to do the gas tank mod for a little extra capacity, but would hate to drop the tank out and find that it is actually a 15 gallon tank.

amerijeep 07-27-2005 10:49 AM

Same tank. I did mine. It was holding 15 before. Now it holds 22. Everything worked out good on it. It reads full for about the first 50 miles or so before the needle on the gauge moves.

Sandhara 07-27-2005 12:03 PM

Woah, Woah, Woah, do what now?????

khenderson 07-27-2005 04:03 PM

thanks amerijeep.

Sandhara,

ALL TJ's have a 19 gallon tank, but the filler hose goes into the tank further on some, allowing it to only fill to about 15 gallons. so you can drop the tank out, cut the filler hose on the inside of the tank allowing it to fill up more.

here's a link for you

I can barely afford to pay for a full tank now...

GOD, why would I want it to cost more?

khenderson 07-27-2005 08:29 PM

so that you can go more than 200 miles on a tank. i went to minnesota a while back and it was aggravating to only get 220 on a tank. and when you're in the middle of nowhere with no gas stations around, it's nice to have that extra 5 gallons around.

amerijeep 07-28-2005 08:57 AM

Are you sure about the 19 gallon number? Mine holds 22. Maybe the TJ and YJ don't have the same tank.

As far as gas prices go, I only have to gas mine up about every 6 weeks give or take.

My job keeps me so busy that I barely have time for the ole girl these days. I am putting some money into her though so she doesn't feel neglected.

Hey! Maybe I could some money into the jeep, too. :D

Sandhara 07-28-2005 09:27 AM

:) Thank you

damn, i have to fill up at least once a week, daily driver for me, i drive a total of 44 miles a day, and thats only if i don't go out after work!! this might not be a bad idea, i prob should pull down my tank seeing since i think i may have drilled through it.............that sux

mopar0166 06-04-2008 12:17 PM

Will that trick work for my 04 tj becuase im encountering a simular issue, when the needle is just below E im only putting in about 12-13 gallons?

jbone03 06-04-2008 12:49 PM

gas tank conversion?

Does this Mod through off the fuel guage? With gas prices climbing I like to monitor my fuel mileage.

Triple88a 06-04-2008 01:54 PM

jbone this mod throws off the fuel gauge at the beginning when you first fill up. The gauge simply reads full until the tank reaches the 15 gallon mark.

I seem to remember an easier way to do it that did not involve dropping the tank. Going to have to look, it involved disconnecting the filler setup and pulling it out, cutting and putting it back in, something in the back of my mind from the willys+jeep news groups back in 98 when this trick first came out. I had a 20 gallon XJ so I did not pay attention other than a mental note.

You have to remove the tank and pull the fuel pump to access the filler tube inside the tank. Once the pump is out, reach inside with a razor knife and cut the extended filler tube as high as you can get it.
