Loud popping noise coming from rear diff..

Im new here everybody. Just logged up to see if anyone knew what may be goin on in the rear diff. I left out yesterday and I got about a 1/4 of a mi down the road and a huge loud popping noise came from my rear diff and it made my jeep jerk really hard. Now it doest do it constantly. I can put it in gear and go about 10 or 15 feet and it just makes this horrible horrible noise. If anybody has a clue what it may be, please let me know. And if you have any questions, feel free to message me on here. thank you so much...oh and its a 99 Wrangler 3.0 5 speed 4X4

The first thing I would do is get underneath the jeep, and see if your driveshafts can move around. They shouldn't.

ive crawled up underneath it and all shafts are tight. But again the front shaft from the transfer case to the tranny is a little loose. But the noise isnt coming from there....im just baffled and I plan on tearing into the housing tomorrow just to probe around but dont know what im even looking for. never done any work on diffs...

Ring and Pinon. Pop the rear diff cover and look for missing teeth or pieces in the bottom of the housing.

4 point is probably correct, have you done any wheeling? if so did you find water?

the chunks might fall out when you pop the cover off.

next thing is, what color is the fluid, i know you wont know until the cover is off.

If it still moves under power then it's either going to be ring gear teeth or a cracked carrier. If it won't move when making the noise then it's probably blown up spider gears.
