How fast do you drive your TJ?
 
Coming into town today in my '04 Rubicon, I was cruising at 80 just to keep from getting run over by 18 wheelers. Is sustaining that speed for about 10 mins excessive for the 4.0 motor? I normally keep it at 60-65 which is 2100-2300 rpm.

Sounds like you're geared for it. I don't see a problem at all. Run mine past 80 once in a while on long straight stretches of hwy.

highway I'm at 70. Surface streets never past 59-60. But that's more of a speeding thing (too many tickets in a "past life") than anything else.

Sustaining that speed for three hours isn't excessive for the 4.0. Assuming an OEM setup w/manual, that's only ~3000 rpm.

I've driven mine for hours at a time on 33's at 75-80 with zero problems. Nothing like a huge top off road trip

I actually hit 90 MPH in my Jeep about a month ago on the freeway. It has been running so smooth lately with my new tires. It felt like it wanted me to open it up. I didn't want to push it to hard and blow a gasket but, I wanted to see what it could do. I wasn't even on the floor and I could feel like it had more. I didn't want to get a ticket so I backed off. I've heard that this is good to clean things out.

Normally, I just drive the speed limit 65MPH or 5 miles over.

When I first brought My Jeep, it had one mile on the odometer. I had ordered it from the factory, and I was constantly calling the factory and then the dealership to see when it would arrive. They had put it on the dealership floor display and everyone was trying to buy my Jeep. The sticker had my name on it, and I kept that sticker. I drove it really slowly on the highway for the first 500 miles or so, according to the owners manual to properly break in the engine. That was so awesome. This Jeep was my first brand new vehicle. I loved the smell. I will be the only owner of this Jeep until the day I leave this earth.

When I am on the freeway I drive at 60-65. I have 4:10 gears. The gas mileage/gas prices are horrendous enough without adding more to the equation. If I have a long road trip I take the wife's KIA Sportage with a V-6. It cruises nicely and comfortably with decent mileage.
The freeway's in the midwest are nothing like CA 101 or the Nimitz.

I have a 98 with 4.0, 32rh, 3.07 gears and 31s.

Normally, 65-75 on the highway, leaning towards the 65-70 side. Bad side winds can make that a bit hairy in construction areas though.

Hit 90 indicated once on a downward slope. She really hits a wall at 85 though.

When I bought my '06 Rubi, I had a 10 hour drive home. 10 hour drive in my sports car that is. I quickly found the combo of Jeep aerodynamics and 4:10 gears = hole in fuel tank like gas mileage over 62ish mph (she's bone stock, 31's, hard top, etc). Of course in Jersey, you do 62mph, you will get run over by a rig, so there where plenty of time I hit 80-85. I don't do much highway with her, when I do, I stick to the right, hit cruise control and set it to 61-62mph, yep, even in a 65 or 70. They can go around me or pay for my gas. They honk, they get a wave and a smile. The ride me like a half price hooker on $2 Tuesdays, then they get one or a couple of things: the single finger salute, the cruise button drops the mph down about 2 mph each time you hit it and there's no brake light warning, course there's always the e-brake pull after taking the cruise off. That wakes them up and gets them away from ya, lol

Couple years into owning mine and I have never took mine to 70, not even once. 60-65 hwy speed limit or below city.

Just see no use, it's a friggin Jeep.

People that say I have to go 80 to keep up with traffic make me say huh? Why do you have to keep up with traffic?

I live in Arizona between Phoenix and Tucson. The speed limit on Highway 10 is 75 MPH. I can drive at 75 with no problem. Scary thing is when I'm driving 75 in the right lane on 10, cars are passing me by like I am standing still! I have a stock 2003 Sahara auto with 3:73 on 30 X 9.5 BFG AT.

I drive 75 on the freeway where the speed limit is 75. I would go faster but because I haven't fixed my speedo I'm physically limited to 78. At 78 the Jeep thinks I'm doing like 110 and the speed limiter kicks in. At 75 I'm turning 3k RPM with 4.88 gears and 33s.

I generally run about 60 or so. More to save gas than anything else. We've got a fairly low price for here, but still a lot more than I like paying, and higher than a large part of the country...

Before my regear I ran 3750 RPM's doing just under 80. I would run it like that for hours on my way to Moab with no problems although it would get hot sometimes when it was 100+ outside.

Typically 75-80 on the highway. A couple of times I hit 90 for a small stretch.

As long as the needle isn't bouncing off the redline, go any speed you want as far as the motor is concerned. However, IMO anything over 70 mph is death trap speed in a jeep. They are aerodynamic as a brick, handle like ass, and have WWII brakes.

Don't use the "it's a jeep" excuse for poor handling. My Jeep handles just as well as any other vehicle at 75.

Several have mentioned that I'm geared for it, which reminds me that I forgot to say it's a 5 spd with .78 5th and I read the '04 TJ Rubis have 4.10s.

I've got an 01 with 3:73 and 32/11.50 tires... Daily driving is 60-70mph without issue. Took a three hundred mile trip the other day, and it held 70 the whole time. The only thing that makes it unpleasant is the heat off the gearbox! It had to cool down for a bit afterwards... Check gauges light coming on and shuddering/stalling at a low idle until it cooled down... It's back to normal now :-)

I am not going to say lifted and 33's handles like anyother vehicle but I have no issue doing 80 or more. I do it daily. As far as a straight line, mine does not wander at all and I can keep it straight with two fingers on the wheel. I know other have posted they have to hold on for dear life. Something is wrong with those.

Mine handles just fine at high speeds, but 75 max for me... :( 2.5" SL w/ 1.25" BL on 33x12.5 and 3.07 gears (regearding very soon)

As long as you're under redline and temps are all good, you can drive whatever speed you like and you will not wear-out the engine any differently as long as you stay in the same gear... Staying in the same gear, the total revolutions the engine will turn for a given distance does not changes, regardless of speed (drive slower, drive longer).

(And my Jeep drives perfectly fine at 75 with a conservative suspension lift and tires)

As well as ANY other vehicle at 75mph???? What a load of crap!!! Hardly any Jeep on any road handles as well at 75 as do just plain ol beaters let alone any decent late model car, or truck for that matter. My 2000 VW Jetta TDi with 270,000 miles at 75 can do an emergency lane change without a hiccup (not a standard change, but emergency quick jerk the wheel maneuver). Try that emergency lane change at 75 in a Jeep and its a crapshoot whether you live to tell about it.
