Paint

Does anybody know were i could get a nice paint job for a cheap price

jpdocdave 04-15-2009 07:20 AM

no such thing. define nice, ccain did a nice job on his jeep with rattle cans. but to pay someone to do it, you get what you pay for. maaco and whoever, will be a cheap looking paint job.

WRANGLERKID19029 04-15-2009 07:34 AM

do you know about how long the macco paint jobs usually last????

jpdocdave 04-15-2009 07:35 AM

if you have rust 1 or 2 years before it comes back.

WRANGLERKID19029 04-15-2009 07:39 AM

i was planning on sanding it down before i gave it to them to paint

jgano23 04-15-2009 07:48 AM

i agree w/ dave. a good cheap paint job is an oxymoron. sometimes if you do the prep work yourself (ie: sanding, body filler, primer) and then take it to macco for them to paint it comes out ok. but really, if you are going to do that you might as well do the whole thing yourself. some advice that i can give you is use a good quality paint. duplicolor is an ok paint, stay away from Rustoleum it is the worst paint known to man. Also don't get it from Lowes or Home-Cheapo. A spray paint can is usually 20 oz, the maximum amount of paint that you can put in that size can is 17 oz (there needs to be room left for expansion). Lowes and Home-Cheapo sell 20 oz cans that ore only 15 oz full. it doesn't seem like much of a loss, but you have to think about it this way: if you buy a case of paint (12 cans) that are 15 oz full you get 180 oz total; if you buy a case of paint where the cans are 17 oz full you get 204 oz total. by buying a case of paint that are 15 oz full you are actually losing 1.5 cans worth of paint. so instead of buying 12 cans you are only getting 10.5 cans worth. Buy a good quality paint like "Seymour of Sycamore MRO High Solids" that is what i'm using on my cj. it is a great quality paint and that will last the elemants of the Mid-Atlantic Region.

BTW, my rant is over about the "Big Box" rip off stores.

but unfortunately of the 8 million hits that he would get most of them would be useless to him. at least if he asks it here he can get a response form a real person and then ask follow up questions. please forgive me if i misinterpreted you tone :wavey:.

x2. any of the paint that you can get from stores like walmart, home-cheapo, lowes, kmart, etc. is going to crap.

WRANGLERKID19029 04-15-2009 08:36 AM

thanks a lot for the advice, but what about a clear coat, is it easy to get, hard to put on, expensive.

jgano23 04-15-2009 08:38 AM

clear coat is easy to get and it goes on just like the paint. i think is costs as much as a can of paint would

tn-yj 04-15-2009 08:38 AM

yeah I would just do it myself. If you've got a some cash and a free weekend then go for it. The quality of the work you put into your prep and filling will GREATLY affect the outcome. ( is it affect or effect??)

WRANGLERKID19029 04-15-2009 08:59 AM

thanks, a lot i'll start looking into getting all this stuff, anymore advice????

amerijeep 04-15-2009 05:51 PM

I just spent 2k getting my YJ painted. I guess it is all about what you want out of it. I've had it for many years now and I plan on having it forever. Well worth it to keep it protected.

WRANGLERKID19029 04-15-2009 07:15 PM

i don't have that much money to spend on paint, i might just do it myself.

Kinda takes away from being on a discussion forum to tell people to Google it.

jpdocdave 04-15-2009 07:58 PM

^ya really, the worst thing is there's a lot of forums out there where thats the response you'll get....or the "why don't you try the searh button"

kinda takes the fun outta talkin to people.

amerijeep 04-15-2009 08:25 PM

Not to continue off topic but I remember that is what drew me to this forum to begin with. I skipped out of the other popular jeep forum as soon as I found this one and never went back. That was predominantly the attitude there and probably still is. There was only about 50 people on WF and it was still 100% better.

Sorry to divert the topic further.

Oh, just looked and I joined WF exactly 4 year and 5 days ago. WF had it's 4 year birthday about 10 days ago. Happy birthday WF!!

or the ever popular "use the darn search"

jpdocdave 04-16-2009 07:13 AM

^ya, where's trip?

jgano23 04-16-2009 07:20 AM

FYI, going w/ a flat or even satin paint color is a lot easier than a gloss or semi-gloss. the flat/satin doesn't show imperfection as much as gloss/semi-gloss paint.

WRANGLERKID19029 04-16-2009 07:34 AM

let me know if i'm wrong but dosen't satin have a little shine to it????

ya, but a lot less than gloss. flat paint is the best, but satin works pretty good too.

WRANGLERKID19029 04-16-2009 07:39 AM

i might go for that, where could you get that

87YJWrangler 04-18-2009 12:46 AM

Advice: Buy a box not just a few cans, it ends up being cheaper; go with the flat or satin, easier to apply and touch up if you have a steady hand; Clear coat isnt needed with flat or satin Im almost sure correct me if Im wrong

NAVYCHIEF 04-18-2009 01:07 AM

i just painted sahara green hard half doors with krylon white primer and white semi gloss. matches 1994 white pretty good. covered real good. couple of weeks and i'll use a liquid wax to protect them. the real expense is the Renegade decals for them.

Maaco = home of the $199 entire paint job for your truck or car lol! Love that place!
