Project Phoenix

Back in November my trail rig gave up the ghost as I was driving to get some coffee. It caught fire. Nothing too bad but the Ins company totaled it and I purchased it back from them and parted it out.
This was all that was left of it.

I found a deal on a Jeep in CA so I made a road trip with my friend Mike. I was thinking it was going to be a quick fix and go type Jeep.

After I got it home I took a closer look with the guys at Absolute Offroad in Phoenix. Joe, the owner, pointed out a few things and then came up with a crazy out of left field idea. “Why not build a Jeep ground up?”
So here are some pics of the build.

We got the axles under the rig and put the springs under it to make it a roller.

We were able to get the body off the old frame and the eng out. With a little love the body and eng went on the new frame and its starting to look like a Jeep again.

Mike (Skatchkins) runs a print and ship store and came up with a great design for the hood and sides of the Jeep.

To the Guys in Higherground 4x4 for their support and help.
To Jack from the Rock Rats for giving up some prime golf weekends to help me turn a wrench.
To Ryan from Absolute Offroad for working on his weekends and nights to correct my screw ups when he had worked in the shop all day long.
To Joe at Absolute Offroad for letting me work on my stuff in his shop. Also for all the help and direction on this project. Lastly for having all the parts I needed.

My biggest thanks goes out to Mike (Skatchkins) from HigherGround4x4 for being there every weekend! For the killer hood art! For doing all the little things and never complaining! I could not have done this with out you!

Glad to see the structural integrity of the frame survived the fire.

I'm excited to see the outcome...please keep us updated

It was just a small eng fire. The eng still ran after the fire and got passed on to another Jeeper in need. The ins company took one look at my Jeep with all its body damage and said DONE.

Nice build. :punk::cool::punk:

I wish for the ability and the green backs to do something like that.

RatherBNarizona 04-22-2009 01:33 PM

nice! looks awesome

booger 04-22-2009 01:38 PM

what was wrong with the one you bought that made it necessary to replace the frame?

ygohome 04-22-2009 03:42 PM

Yay Bob!

If I remember correctly, the other frame that came with the red jeep was modified alot by the previous owner and wouldn't work for what Bob had planned for it.

Yay Bob!

 What kind of bumper is on that jeep on the lift.

^ looks like the mercenary, with body bars rolling to the doors.

My god... This thread has me speechless... Not because you are building one kick ass Jeep, but because we now have photographic proof of Jack and Joe actually doing some work!

Joe Daro did that bumper and tubework at his shop. they tied into his PSC sliders. Attached is a better picture of it.

He's just completed his new jeep build... a sunburst orange with all the genright armor and trimmings rolling on black WE beadlocks and comp treps. Its purdy. It was in a photo shoot up at Moab last week for JP magazine.

Thanks brotha. :D

Yeah, I think all of us are ready for this one to be done. We have been thru 3 frame off jeep builds over the last couple months. I don't think any of us are even remotely wanting to ever take another jeep body off a frame again. :banghead: I know Bob is glad that this is in the final stages.

Hey bubba, all the front bolts are good now and the trac bar has been set for good this week.

I don't remember who it was, but whoever was asking about the old frame. It had been heavily modified for a completely different build when Bob got a hold of it. The front of the frame had been stretched, the rear had been back halfed, the body had been removed and the RE skid was sucked up to be flat. The lowers had been recessed up in the frame and the uppers were beginning to crack in the mounts. It had pretty much outlived its usefulness. Had some very cool ideas, but mainly ones that worked with big 60's, full hydro and 42's. Bob got it with Rubi 44's (with no brackets on them at all) and 38's. This thing will be fast as hell though. :D Can't wait to see it on the trail this weekend. :D

Oh yeah that's right. The boomerang is going away and I'll be there with ya. :punk:

It's no LCG rig by any means, but it's very stable.
