4 hi and low is all mechanical, no vacuum relation at all. all the vacuum has to do with is engaging the right front axle shaft.

its possibly just a shift linkage problem, or else its inside the t case. not sure if i've ever heard of no 4 hi, but 4 low working.

but as i think of it more, are you sure the front is engaged w/ 4 low, you'll still get the low range gear even if the front isn't engaging, so if the front isn't engaging it could be vacuum related. but if the front is engaging, and you get 4 wheel drive in low, but not hi, that is mechanical.

hi doc, oops, redux,,,,,,,,,,,,,,no low either. i do get vacuum to the tcase switch. i jumpered the tubbing and get vacuum at the front axel but no help with the engagement. when i hook the tubes back on the tcase switch i lose it at the axel. going to change the tcase switch first. can a lack of vacuum at the axel simply not keep the front axel engaged? thanks, mike

jpdocdave 04-24-2009 07:18 AM

^ya, it could i guess. i hate that whole system. i know you've been having problems with it for a while right?

TeeJay 04-24-2009 07:40 AM

Pull the shift fork from the axle and take a look at it. They have a tendency to seperate from the pin that it's mounted too. If that's the case you'll still have vacuum and everything will check out fine, but the fork won't pull the axle into engaugment.

It's also the best one to check because it doesn't cost anything to check and is obvious when it's broken.

4 hi is over rated anyway

yburn 04-24-2009 10:42 AM

What do you use 4 hi for? I never use it, put in low and go !!!!

NAVYCHIEF 04-24-2009 11:13 AM

cause it's there, it should work. no extreme 4x4 here. all flat beach. little snow. it has always worked fine. just last week it quit. never had a light, though.
