The ring that the belt wraps around on the engine came completely off. The engine is too hot to play with right now so I can't look any closer yet. But does that ring just slide back on? Does the entire wheel that the ring was around come off the engine to be replaced?
Never seen this before. The belt is perfectly fine and there is no other obvious damage other than the picture. It's a '99 4 cylinder if that matters.

I really doubt that piece just sides on, looks like you need a new crankshaft pulley
The harmonic balancer came apart. It happens. You need a new one.
You'll need a puller to get the old one off if you do it yourself.

Its actually pretty common. The 2 parts of the balancer are basically held together by a rubber insert that dampens vibrations. No big deal. You can get a new or used one, not too expensive. When mine separated I got new just because you cant beat new parts at your door. LOL. Like JKP said you will need a puller if you do it yourself. You can rent those at most auto parts stores. Anyone have a write up on the replacement steps? No problem doing the work myself, just never done it before... Simple as attaching the puller, removing, putting the new one on?

Pretty much might need a chain wrench to get the bolt off and on tho or some big channel locks

Reading up on it and saw some suggestions to replace the timing cover seal at the same time. Any other preventative things I should do while I've got it off?

Yeah, the seal, timing cover gasket, maybe the oil pan gasket if you remove the timing chain cover. Looks like you have an oil leak somewhere.
I used a breaker bar to remove the balancer bolt on my '92. Impact wrench would be even better.

If your front crank seal is leaking-it will just ruin your new harmonic balancer. That may have helped the old one to come apart by swelling/softening the rubber that origionally is/was between the hub and outter part.

With the 2.5 you may or may not be able to fit an impact in between the radiator and the balancer. Depends on the size of the gun. Breaker bar is always 2nd best. Look closely at any gaskets and seals it they seem warn or even in question of being warn I would go ahead and replace them. By he look of the picture posted, Kawzak was probably right, you may be replacing the front crank seal. That's pretty easy to do also. Google it. You'll find step by step instructions on how to do it. Print those out and now you got a portable copy that you can get greasy and oily.

So decided I didn't really have time to do the work over the next few days and brought it up to my local shop. $169 out the door...more than if I did it myself but what the hell, don't need to worry about renting tools and being without a ride until I could get to it.
They're going to take a look at the gaskets and seals while under there. Will do the crankshaft seal regardless.
