3.07 to 3.54

Do y'all think there would be much difference switching from 3.07's to 3.54's ?? My buddy wants to sell me his when he swaps to 4.56 . I can't see that theres enough difference to warrant the change . Was 3.54 a factory ratio on TJ ? I think i should hold out for 3.73 . I dont have big tires , but i would like 31's eventually .
Thanks ..................................... 409 :)

not big enough difference. If your going to swap gears plan two steps ahead.. so figure 4.10's that way when you realize you want 33's your set.

mrbigjeep 09-12-2006 11:58 AM

3.73's is a stock gear too...go with 4.10's like ^^he said...you'll probably go bigger...and that will give you some great grunt on the trail with 31's and still be fine on the road

Bluesman 09-12-2006 01:10 PM

With the 5 speed go to at least 3.74 on 31's I would go with 4.10's though
You could get away with 3.54's and 31's on an auto if you never went taller on tires.

If you went with 4.10's you'd have to replace both carriers... just use the 3.54's or buy new 3.73's.

mrbigjeep 09-12-2006 10:32 PM

shoot you really don't even need new gears with just 31's! especially if you just do moderate wheelin'! i mean it couldn't hurt but you'll be fine without regearing for just 31's

409biscayne 09-13-2006 09:57 PM

I really don't like the 3.07 's , don't pull hard enough . Would i have to change carriers to go to 3.73 ?? How about with rear limited slip ?
Thanks .............................. 409.

some jeeps come factory with 3.73's so you wouldn't have to change the carriers

Some Jeeps come factory with 4.10's too, but any gearing deeper than 3.73 will require a different carrier.

You can use 3.73 gears with your existing carriers.

i thought 4.10's were with the dana 44's

They came in Jeeps with 2.5L also, not just in the 44's. Actually, the only way to get a 44 with 4.10's in it is to buy the Rubicon...

mrbigjeep 09-14-2006 10:09 AM

aah...i forgot about the 4 banger...they always get lower gearing than the 6...at least a lot of the time they do...i've heard some people put 5.13's in 4 bangers!

The LJ's have 3.73 gears and the D44 in the rear, as well. It would seem that the D30, and D35 starting with the 3.07 gears, do not have a very big carrier, and would most likely have to be changed out, even going to the 3.54 gears. That being said, I would think you would be a head of the game by just going ahead, and getting the 4.10's, it would give you much better performance, and would allow you to go up to 33" tires, when the addiction hits. :D

I might be mistaken, but I believe 3.54 to 3.73 is the breakover for the D30. So you would be fine on the carriers. I don't know exactly what the carrier change is on the D35, but the 44 is 3.73 and up.

I'm going to stop by the gear shop today and check on carriers , i'd like 3.73's , but 4.11 may be o.k. too . The thing is i don't use my Jeep like y'all do , it's rarely off-road , i'll probably never put tires on taller than 31's . The area i use it in is moutainous , and i hate having to shift out of 5th every hill , lol.
Good reason to switch out front and rear gears , huh.
Thanks ................................................ 409

mrbigjeep 09-15-2006 11:45 AM

if you don't take it off road much then just go with the 3.73's so that you don't have to get new carriers

In your case then I know you would love the 4.10's in there and it would make a helluva difference over your 3.07. New carriers (Open) will only cost you about 70 a piece.

hmmm...i did not know it was that cheap! in that case maybe it would be a good idea to go with the 4.10's

You are right on the D30 carrier...the D35 breaks at 3:55's up to 4:56's. IMHO, if he is going to go to the cost of regearing, go with the 4:10's. I ran 3:07's w/33's for awhile...couldn't get out of my own way
