Shock mounting question? Specifically Bilstein 5100
 
Why do I see some Bilstein shocks mounted showing this way and other brands of shocks mounted with the tube facing the opposite direction? My new 5100s seem to face the opposite way my previous terafelx vss9550 rear shocks faced? Why is the tube up on some and facing down on the others?

Depends on manufacturer and style of shock, honestly. A monotube can be mounted rod up or down. Some will be rod down, but makes the rod susceptible to nicks, now rod up if a rock hits the can hard can't compress/extend. :beerdrinking:

So no benefit to it being mounted either way really?

Since you have to install them in the way the correct mounting points are on the shock, the new bilsteins I just purchased seem to have to be mounted upside down from what I'm used to. I guess I'm curious why I've had it both ways from time to time. Does Rancho have a preference?

I think its preference really. Although some shocks are designed to be installed tube down - some it doesnt matter.

Although some old timers think its bette to have the tube up - less wear ...seals last longer...dunno if its true.

Yep doesn't matter. My 5100's and FOX ran rod down. Others were body down I believe.

We have the shock body down on all our applications that I can think of. Try to protect that piston rod as much as possible from nicks, etc. We also will have our shock mounts match up to OE.

Does bilstein make different kinds of 5100s? I thought they were all the same but then I see pictures like this of two different kinds under "5100" with quadratec and the like.

I can't say if there are two different kinds, but I ordered my shocks in March from Quadratech and they look identical to your lower pic. Mounting is rod up in the front, down in the rear. These are the parts I ordered: 24-146708 and 24-146715. My Jeep has 2.5 inches of lift.

Mine look like yours too, the ones I just received from Northridge4x4 this week are mounted the same as the ones in the pic you put up. Does anyone actually have the 5100s made in the way shown from the pic with all four above "opposite direction"? Or, is this just a pic fluke?

Noticed your still using the boots, have you checked them recently for debris?

Per application... A different vehicle prob has them flipped. Maybe Those are not JK shocks,

I checked for debris about two months ago and everything seemed ok. I have been watching. If I see anything funky while cleaning, I'm going to cut them to shreds with my Spyderco! Did you leave yours on for long or deep six them straight out of the box?

I haven't installed the shocks yet. Just got them a few days ago and my lift is coming in today. At home waiting on it as we speak. The shocks all came with the black boot that is shown on them above. I don't think I'm going to install them with the boots. I've never run any shocks with them before and I've heard/read to much about the negatives of leaving them on.

i would agree with this... to the average owner, the shock boots are fine because their rigs typically dont get caked in trail debris, dirt and grime. but if you're wheeling - you're better off with the boots gone so you can observe the condition of your shocks a bit more frequently. :thumb:

I did some reading, and I could only find one good reason to keep the boots on. Rocks can sometimes chip the rod. Indiana is not that rocky. Just finished slicing. My shocks look pretty bada$$ now! Thank you!

For what it's worth, my 5100's are the same way - ordered from Jason at Krawl Off-road. Rod up in the front, rod down in the rear.

Have those same part #'s on my Jeep as well.
-ESP, had these put in at 4WP in Raleigh while getting some other work done and they put them in rod up in front and down in the rear as well.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I suppose I was trying to understand why I've seen them both ways for no rhyme or reason. In the end, I was wondering if Bilstein may have sent me the wrong shocks or ones for a different application but all these replies show that the part numbers on my shocks are correct and others have them the same way. Thanks -

I got the 5100's rod up in front and rod down out back. Boots off all around.

The reason most likely is due to clearance and fit issues with different vehicles. At least that sounds like a probable reason.

Less Sprung weight is why race trucks mount shocks this way...........

Here's another thought. Take a look at the picture above and imagine one of those rear tires slipping off a rock. If the can was on the bottom, it would surely get damaged.

spot on Tom. I crushed one of my BDS shock cans at sheriffs jeep fest. on the dam obstacle course. :facepalm:

Glad I found this thread, I am installing my TF 2.5 lift tomorrow with Bilsteins on it... Guess I need to hack the boot off first thing then.... good info!
