Max Tire Size without Lift
 
I've got an 08 Sahara with the 18's and the stock 255-70/18 tire size doesn't offer a lot choices. Anyone had experience with going up in size to gain a few more tire choices? How large can I go without clearance and gearing issues?

depends if you want to cut fenders or not, id bet if you dont go wheeling you can fit 33's

Without rubbing AT ALL (turns, flexing) 32's. A lot of people run 33's and deal with the very few times that there will be some rub.

I'm in a similar boat with 17" wheels, though. Will spacers alleviate the rubbing issue (is it on hard parts), or is it the fenders (which can be shaved)? Thanks- Mark W.

275/70-18 --- only problem will be that the speedo/odo will be off and stock gearing will seem sluggish. That tire size would go very well with 4.56 gears.

Spacers (or wheels with different BS) will alleviate rub while turning and on the brake lines. However rub on the fenders will need to be addressed with a lift when you have tires greater than 32". 33" with correct spacers will not have any rubbing unless at full flex. 33" on stock suspension just looks funny too (2-2.5 lift is the way to go IMO).

285/70/17's don't rub on-road so far with no lift or spacers. Off-road, I believe they'd rub, however. Spacers and lift to follow shortly :) Mark W.

By the way, in a TIGHT turn to the right, they rub ever so slightly, but you shouldn't be turning that tightly anyways- Mark W.

Much stumpier look.

No spacers (wheel or springs). No rubbing at all. Spare fits on the carrier with just 1mm to spare away from the bumper and 1mm to spare from the stop light. The front has 5mm room at full turn in each direction.

Perfect.

The width makes sense (255 to 275) but the height doesn't seem right... Tire manufacturers seem to have thier own interpretation, sometimes. Just my .02

I currently run 255/75 17 and would love to find a pair of 275/85 17 but the tire makers tend to 1) change tire nomenclature (32 x 12.5 16 - ex) and 2) charge alot more for the larger wheel. I kinda of wish I would have purchase the stock wrangler wheels.

I think a 32 inch tire would be fine but I don't flex like some of these guys, but I do have problems understanding offsets. Can someone clarify?

Offset is the space between the centerline of the wheel and the hub mounting surface. Backspacing is the measurement from the hub mounting surface and the inner tire mounting surface. Most Jeepers are only seriously concerned with BS in my experience. On cars with big brakes you have to watch offset as well, to clear the calipers. I can find a diagram, if you need it.

255/70/18's should be about an inch shorter than 275/70/18's, but there are variances depending on the tire and mfg.

:eek: Whether it's a 2dr/4dr, each mfg states what the DIAMETER of each tire is, but

When you mount it on your vehicle, depending on the WEIGHT front/back, the tire will be up to 5% smaller in dia-(air pressure/width-etc)

On the 4dr, when you've installed a larger size and put it on the STOCK spare tire mount---

You SHOULD get extended bumpstops (Daystar), these aren't just for kicks they will keep your hinge welds from fracturing

I use them and also a small dense foam cushion, on the rear bumper,(under tire)

If/when you go to an alternate rear bumper/tirecarrier--that solves the hinge trouble

I've used Shrockworks on several vehicles prior to the jeep--Outstanding

Why would the tire be 1' smaller?

275 = width in MM, 70 = 7.0" wall height 18's is wheel size- 18 + 7 + 7 = ~33 inch tires, but some of the wall is inside the wheel which means it is probably a 32/31.5 tire. That is my understanding?

That right there's your problem. :) It isn't 7" sidewall. On metric tires, the sidewall measurement is that percentage of the treadwidth. Using your example... 275x 70 is 275mm wide x 70 % of 275 for a sidewall that = 7.5"

So a 275x70 is roughly 10.82" wide with a 7.57" sidewall, over all diameter is 33.15". 255x70 is 10.03"wide with 7.02 sidewall height, overall diameter is 32.05".

These are unmounted measurements, and like I said before different mfgs vary in how true to measurements they run. So, if you changed mfg, and type tire, your differences will vary.

Worth mentioning also, the manufacturers also lie about the size.
Like my Sahara's stock 32" tires? Not even 31" in reality.
My old 32.6" Generals were under 32". My 33.1" MTR/K's are actually 32.3", etc.

The BFGs A/T KO 275/70/18 are half an inch taller and half an inch wider than the dueler revo 2 of the same size 275/70/18. The revos look like a stock tire - I tried them and had them removed.

I put 33 by 12.5 on mine no spacers.... Rubs alittle when completely cranked but atleast it looks rad

Keep in mind that the actual height and width for any given tire size will vary from one manufacturer to another. If you want the EXACT height and width, it can be found on the tire manufactuer's website.

Do you like the BFG's? that is the tire that I'm looking at, my concern is that my JKU is my daily driver on the interstate for an hour each way so I don't want anything too noisy or anything that will wear out too quickly.

With normal care you can easily get 60,000 miles out of BFG AT KO's.

PROBO...What size rim do you have on in that picture? And my stock 2008 Jeep Unlimited Sahara is getting 275/70/18 BF Goodrich A/T KO as we speak, I am just double checking that they will fit and the spare on the back will fit. Whats the conversion again? Thanks to anyone with info.

That's a stock 18 inch jeep wheel powder coated fights pretty good. Leveling kit and fenders I think it would be perfect

I am also wondering. I have 33" X 17 rims nitto dura graplers a/t. I want to buy the same tire for the spare. do you think it would be a problem ?

I have a35 on my stock rack... Little love got it on there... But I bet if you wheel alot that tire rack might brake
