Recommend a head unit, under $250

I've searched the forum and have bought a lot of radios back in the day, but it's been a while since I've upgraded any car stereo of mine. I've already decided to go with an Alpine or Pioneer. There are plenty of choices around the $299 mark, but I'm curious to know if someone has any recommendations for cheaper head units in the $150 - $250 range. Be specific if you can, give the model number. I just got my first Jeep and I'm ready to upgrade, but I don't have a lot of extra money. I'd like on that could control and iPod or at least have an USB input so I could use a flash drive. Besides that, it needs to be able to power four aftermarket speakers that I've also yet to buy. I'll be going with a set of 5 1/4's and a set of 6 1/2's in my Jeep. Thanks for the help.

Something like the JVC Arsenal KD-A805 might be worth a looking at.

I am usually interested in the DAC—Burr-Brown has been a good bet for a long time and is usually less harsh and more musical. Next the line level output. This one is 5-volts out, which is a very strong signal. To get 5-volts out with competitively low noise is a sign of better stuff. And finally this is 20-watts MOSFET out built in, so if you are not using an amp you can at least count of a decent 20 coming out of the head unit. With some efficient speakers this should be OK. I see this unit for around $220.

Hey Jgano, I just the deck you are talking about last night at Target and was wondering how good it is. How long have you had yours. I've read a lot of good reviews, but I've also seen quite a few mentioning that the deck stopped working multiple times and had to be replaced. Thanks for the help.

i've had it for over a year and have had no problems. the unit is in my cj and is exposed to cold temps of 0* - 100* plus a lot of moisture. i have even dropped my face plate in a puddle and it still worked. i really love that head unit.

if you take a look between the deh-6000ub and the deh-p77dh you can see that the p6000ub has more inputs, a 7 band EQ, ipod built in audio, the usb memory, bluetooth ready, HD ready, aac playback, wma playback, mp3 playback, cd-rw playback, the SuperTuner IIID rather than the SuperTuner III.

Sure, if those are features you need or use.

Otherwise, the deh-p77dh has larger buttons, fills the opening, is easy to use, and IMO looks better in the Jeep.

Plus, offers more RMS power to drive speakers if not using an external amp.

I'm not getting into a pissing match over something as stupid as head units. Just offering a suggestion as the OP requested.
