When do you guys run the 4 wheel drive

Hey guys,

do you guys run the 4 wheel drive in the heavy rain on the highway?

Snow, obviously, i assume.

Is running it in the rain a bad idea?

Im in florida, the only time i have used the 4-wd is when im taking my boat out of the water on the boat ramp.

skeeter 05-06-2009 11:20 AM

Never for rain and only when I'm having traction problems in snow or ice.

dos0711 05-06-2009 11:23 AM

Sand dunes, mud and beaches.

pyro 05-06-2009 12:16 PM

whenever im not on pavement.

jgano23 05-06-2009 12:19 PM

i'm with skeeter on this one. never in the rain and only in snow/ice when i've got no traction. really the only time i use 4wd is off road.

stevens243 05-06-2009 12:59 PM

Yes, running 4x4 in the rain (on pavement) is a bad idea.

mr4x4 05-06-2009 04:22 PM

I only run 4wheel drive when I'm wheeling never need it on the pavment or on the dirt roads (sceinic trails)

thaduke2003 05-06-2009 04:23 PM

I only run it if there's snow covering the road or icy conditions. Otherwise, MAYBE on dirt/mud- only if I'm going slow enough to where I might get stuck- Mark W.

MouthfulOfGrass 05-06-2009 05:07 PM

Maybe, if it's raining hard enough, where there's dirt/mud/debris on the road along with a LOT of water to make traction dicey. Otherwise not in rain. Only off road, only where it's needed. Just because I'm on a dirt road, doesn't mean I should have it in 4 wheel drive.

05GT-O.C.D. 05-06-2009 05:15 PM

In NE OH we get heavy lake effect snow, so I run it often when dealing w/ that. Very rarely I'll run it in a heavy rain on an interstate when there's ponding. The truth is, during those times the smart thing to do would be to slow down b/c I'm probably driving too fast for the conditions anyways.

Contra 05-06-2009 05:18 PM

i don't drive my jeep in the rain, that is what i use my main truck for, but if it were my DD i would use 4x4 only if i drive less than 30mph in rain
it doesn't ice up down here much...

What is the recommendation for how often we should engage 4wd system (for general upkeep and maintenance) if not offroad on a weekly basis?

Does it say in your Owners Manual? I don't worry about it on my TJ in 4WD every weekend.

My Toyota pick-up (owners manual) said to engage 4hi for at least 100 miles per month  I know its not the same for your jeep, but I'm just saying it was covered in the OM.

For my Toyota Sequoia, once a month.

For my Jeep, I've looked in the manual and it seems to only say when not to engage it (dry pavement) I can't remember reading any "engage 4wd" schedule.

stevens243 05-08-2009 11:18 AM

No reason (maintainance wise) to run 4x4 on your jeep as unless you remove your front driveshaft or put in some hubs everything is always turning. You are just not applying poswer to the front. So everything is getting moved/lubed while you are just driving around.

When someone in traffic irritates me.

Bird Dog 05-08-2009 12:11 PM

Never in the rain.
4WD in Snow if it's old and packed/tracked.
In new snow 4" or less I use 2WD.
4 WD At the boat ramp so I dont tear up the grass and dirt.
Off road were it is steep, muddy or a large drop off along the edge.
2WD if conditions are dry, flat or not really steep.
4WD on the beach and sometimes 2WD ...depends what I'm doing.

Jason WTF? Go trade whatever 4x4 you have in for a sports car since you want to drive your (i presume) JEEP like one!

skeeter 05-08-2009 12:35 PM

Decaff, it's just as tasty...

No one is bashing anyone but just pointing out a fact and that is that JEEPS are not race cars, sports cars and if you think you need to engage the front axle during a rainstorm than you obviously are driving to fast for conditions and need to slow down! Now everyone do this one thing when you leave the house tomorrow, count how many jeeps you see passing everyone on a interstate or a 4 lane. I bet you find that over half the jeeps you see will be doing so! :flipoff:

stevens243 05-09-2009 10:19 PM

Why would you draw the conclusion from the poster's question that he is speeding?

Why would you take an informal poll of speeding jeepers and automatically imply that this person is in the "guilty" group?
