Power Steering Box Leaking
I found some leak around the "Power Steering Box". When examining (eye examination) I believe it is coming from the Pulley on the Power Steering Pump. - Behind the radiator
It was not leaking before, as I did clean the engine using engine drcreaser.
Could it be that there was a dirt mounting around the place where is is leaking now and cuz I did clean that dirt it started leaking? :(
Do I have to thange the whole steering box? or some sealing Gasket will do?
I called the Jeep Agency here in the UAE, and was told that the steering box would cost around US$ 271.
I was also quoted a US$125 for the a power steering box that made by AC/Delco.
The car is a TJ - 98 has a 280,000 KM that is about 175,000 Miles.
Appreciate the guidance.
Cheap fix may be to put some power steering seal and leak conditioner in that may swell the seal up enough to stop the leak.
So the power steering pump is leaking? That should be cheaper and easier to fix IF it's leaking.
Maybe the cleaning you gave it is the cause of what you are seeing. Are you loosing fluid in the pump?
When you called for parts, did you ask for the pump or the steering box? The steering box uses the hydraulic pressure provided by the pump to actually move the steering. It is located all the way in the front of the Jeep slightly on the drivers side and connects the pump to the pitman arm.
So, if something is leaking, just trying to make sure you order the right parts.
When I spoke to the Parts rep. I was talking about a box and pump as well.
I have some photos, they may appear a smaller than I would like to do, but appreciate if you could enlarge and examine.
bringing the subject up, so that I may get a clue for this leak
Sorry if that was an ethical.
Well, I'm not sure I understand, but it appears from your description and the photos that your power steering pump is leaking from the forward bearing seal.
You CAN put a "stop leak" type additive in it (like mentioned above) but I don't recommend that as it's not a permenant fix and I don't like contaminating my fluids with those type of additives.
So, I recommend replacing the pump. I can't tell from the picture but if your serpantine belt is worn, now would be a good time to replace it as you have to pull it off to change the pump anyway.
Unless the box is leaking (and I don't see any sign in the pix) leave it alone.
