Whats the trick to header/bikini top?

When I bought my jeep it had a bikini top with it but no header, so I ordered a header from quadratec last week. It came in yesterday and I cant figure out how to attach the top to it. It may be the wrong one. the header fits like a glove on the jeep but the top has a h channel and I cant figure out how to attach it the header. Please help me...

my header bolts on. my bikini top has hard plastic on it that slides into a channel that's on the header. it's real easy and it makes sense just looking at it. i wonder if you got a header that doesn't work with your bikini?

There are two styles of headers and bikini tops... the drill type header which mounts permanently has a slot that the bikini top slides into from the side. The other type of header is a no-drill header that is held in place with two bolts and the bikini has a hard rubber front edge that slips into the header from the front.

It sounds like you have one of each but they are incompatible with each other. If your TJ is a 2002 or older, it can use either style header. If it's newer than that, you must use the drill-less style header which to me is a bigger PITA to use than the permanently mounted drill-style header. :)

Thanks for the help. I have a message into qaudratec to see what they know. It has the H rail so I imagine it does slide from the side. It looks like there has been a bolt on/drill style installed before..

What year TJ do you have?

Cory 05-12-2009 12:17 PM

2000

Then you could go to either style. And since you already have to change either the header or bikini, I'd swap whichever one it would take to use the drill style header. The effort and time savings of using that style over the no-drill style will add up over the years. :)

How do I know what header to order, to fit the top I have?

T-BONE N BIXBY 05-12-2009 03:44 PM

Access to a good picture or 2 may help us help you. Post pics of the front of your bikini top...(the front of it at least) and post pics of your header. Someone on here can help you out.

Bestop only makes two. A Drill and a No-Drill

I'd stay with the Bestop brand, they aren't any more expensive than any other.

Sounds like you already got this figured out. I might add that you can go to this web page and match the bikini top you bought with the header you need.

Welcome to WF Geoff, glad to see you helping out here.

Nice to have you here representing Bestop Geoff.

How about if you pass along at least one happy Bestop customer's need for some Bestop seat covers that fit Bestop's seats. I have a set of Trailmax Pro fabric seats that are badly stained and my old Bestop seat covers I bought for the OE seats don't fit them. :)

Hint: (though many may have already done this here is a time/temper saver)

I have an 03, bought a header and a bikini, and after several floppy, wind-struggling, three-handed installs I decided to stop fartin' around, and while I had it installed the last time I ran a nice bead of Black Max Super glue all down the seam where the bikini inserts into the header! Works great now, as there is no more comedy of errors when I want it on. Simply lock in the bar, pull back the permanently attached top, and strap'er down! Done! You may want to try the black RV adhesive too.

It used to look like some kinda I Love Lucy-skit! But with lots of cursing...

I do not want to sound repeating the previous posts but yes go to Quadratec site, try to match the pikini and you will find a PDF file on how to install the thing.

Having said that, I have the Safari Pikini and never managed to get the front hard plasting to slide into the channel; tried so many times but just could not.

So what I did is, cut a small hall in the front side of the bikini and screwed the channel over it.

looks good, very tight, and can never come out due to strong wind or speed.

removing is also not difficult at all, just unscrew the bolts the holds the channed to the hook to the front body of the jeep.

Cheers
AlBa

I got the new header for the bikini yesterday and it fits like a glove. much better for day time driving to have the bikini top on and keep the sun out off of you..

T-BONE N BIXBY 05-20-2009 01:01 PM

I'm kind of enjoying the sun right now...Oklahoma had 22 straight days with rain. And the weather hasn't gotten off to a warm start around here. We got 80's today though, so my jeep is showin off her boobs by goin topless!!!

KellyK 05-20-2009 07:11 PM

i posted the same thread. My top wouldnt fit in the C channel of the header. Turned out the top had a 1/4" tube inside it and the channel was 1/4"... didnt account for any of the fabric. So i went to home depot and got a 3/16 wood dowel. Works fine
