How do you tell a TJ from a JK?

Not really asking HOW to tell in general, just curious if you see one passing what sticks out to you that its not a TJ? I look at the door handles.

Round parking/signal lights on the front of the JK vs. The rectangular ones on TJ.

Think the grill may be a bit more slanted too on the JK?

Rubicondon53 09-22-2013 05:41 PM

Easy to spot a JK from way off.. They are a lot bigger than the TJ,

budke 09-22-2013 05:43 PM

Size, location of the blinkers/running lights, fog lights in the bumper. From the rear I look at the tail lights.

TJMichael 09-22-2013 05:44 PM

JKs are wider and have much bigger plastic-covered bumpers, but one of the most noticeable differences are the plastic "flenders" instead of metal front fenders with plastic flares.

s14sh3r 09-22-2013 05:46 PM

The fenders are what I notice.

Greentj05 09-22-2013 05:48 PM

I dunno... The everything? :-P

clull05rubi 09-22-2013 05:50 PM

The big ugly plastic fenders make it stand out like a sore thumb.

Digger84 09-22-2013 05:59 PM

Also clear backup light is at the bottom of the tail light but on a tj clear portion at the top cause the red taillight part has to be at the bottom so it lights the license thru the window on the bottom

KBR97 09-22-2013 06:11 PM

Big plastic fenders, big plastic bumper, turn signals, short hood, mirrors....4 doors.

NJO 09-22-2013 06:14 PM

I just look for the soccer moms and dads who drive them. Mostly last gen. yuppie's drive em.

First and last warning:

DO NOT TURN THIS THREAD INTO JK BASHING
OR IT WILL BE CLOSED AND INFRACTION POINTS WILL BE ISSUED!

Blue Heron 09-22-2013 06:22 PM

Fenders and turn signals for me.

Big Sarge 09-22-2013 06:26 PM

Generally the front bumper with fogs, but you have people like me with a JK front bumper on my TJ. Lol I say the fenders as well

The hood is shorter where the latches are and the door handles are different... If the doors are on

I'm just going to assume you quoted me by accident because nothing in my post was "bashing" a JK. On the other hand, everything in my post was factual.

JK's have big plastic bumpers and fenders, and big mirrors and and some even have 4 doors. Actually I used to own one.

this.

A Jeep Named Jack 09-22-2013 07:39 PM

The fender flares and the wheels if they're stock are what REALLY stick out, but I agree everything about the JK give it away from a TJ.

Wrangl-Erik 09-22-2013 08:29 PM

thanks for all the answers, never really noticed the fender thing

this thread got heated quick lol

KC_Hawker 09-22-2013 08:38 PM

Surprised no one said this already. Jk's, even half doors, have a squared off rear upper door/window. Earlier Jeeps are rounded.

how was kbr 97 bashing jks? ... do they not have rather large plastic fenders (which i like, especially when trimmed) and plastic covered bumpers (eh lol)? lol relax a little

More often than not, threads comparing current and previous Jeep models take wrong turns. Most of the time all it takes is a simple post of, what starts out as facts, can act as a seed to inspire people to turn things ugly. I decided a word to the wise was better than preemptively closing the thread.

Seriously? This is in the tech forum? That alone should be grounds for closing it and issueing infraction points.

lol really ... closing it ... perhaps move it

Raiderfan001 09-22-2013 10:50 PM

Surprised no one has said if the driver waves back or not. You TJ guys are slacking

brs256 09-22-2013 10:53 PM

windshield is far more angled back (aerodynamic) ....they look visably wider .... hard tops are more "boxy" looking .... grills are more "rounded" looking .... lights on sides of fenders are circular , instead of triangular .... jeep emblem on grill, hinge in middle of windshield instead of sides ... there are lots of differences .... its kinda hard to mistake one for the other ... IMHO .. I almost bought a jk .. but instead bought a civic and paid cash for the tj .... if the diesel jk ever comes out .. the hionda will be getting replaced :) ... jks are nice ... and much more comfortable and carlike(in a good way) .. biggest thing I don't like about a jk is the amount of electronics .... a bit confusing i'd imagine.

I considered mentioning that ... but don't want points against me (didn't know there was points to lose)

kyle32 09-23-2013 01:08 AM

light and door handles.. that "new" car look

Holton345 09-23-2013 01:18 AM

Plastic fenders and drivers who rarely wave back.
