JK Shocks on TJ; what to replace with?

Hi All-

Recently bought a 2001 Wrangler Sport from an older gentleman who the trail was getting too rough for. Anyway, I've taken it out quite a few times and love it! One of the rear shocks is leaking, so I found the model number on it and discovered something.

It's a rough country performance 2.2 (660584). According to this here catalog, this model is actually for the JK. So I went out and checked the front shocks, also the front shock for JKs.

Now I don't know what to do. Should I buy the same model for replacement or buy the technically correct one? What does it mean as far as the lift goes? I was under the impression that it was a 2.5 inch lift, but if the JK shocks are different, then maybe the lift is different? Anyway, I'm a total noobie so your advice is appreciated. Picture attached of my new baby:

JK shocks mount up differently than TJ shocks in the front, and in the rear they are too wide at the bottom. The modifications are easy to do, if somewhat frustrating (if you do not have a press). I did them in an evening. I run stock 2014 JK shocks on my TJ and they are very nice.

I run STOCK JK shocks because I got them brand new for next to no money. They are 3" longer than the stock TJ shocks. I was running a 3" lift already with four dead shocks that were doing nothing. Essentially I have been rolling on springs with a tiny amount of damping from the shocks. These fit what I was running, spring-wise. And the stock JK shocks ride very nicely.

Keep in mind that if STOCK JK shocks will not fit unless modified, aftermarket ones will have all the same issues.

Now, I personally cannot imagine this guy (or a shop) modifying lifted JK shocks to fit onto a TJ. They WILL NOT FIT as they come. You have to press out the steel sleeve inside the lower bushings from the fronts and add in bar pins or a bar pin eliminator kit.

The rears require work on a grinder to make the steel sleeves in the lower bushings narrow enough to fit into the smaller TJ shocks mounts. (Or you have to bend the shock mounts, which is not a good idea if you ever plan on running actual TJ shocks again).

I think the computer gave you wrong information (or you miscopied the number or entered it incorrectly on the computer) since no one in their right minds would do this unless, like me, he got them for next to free and brand new. The TJ shocks that lift the same amount are probably less costly than the JK ones and will bolt right up flawlessly.

Thanks for the information guys. I guess I'll order the TJ part and try putting it on. It sounds like it would be very unlikely that it's actually a part for a JK.

Those RC 2.2's are lower end shocks. I would just replace all 4 and go with better riding shocks like OME, Rancho 9000xl's, or Bilsteins. Make sure it's correct length for your lift.
