Engine ticking making me nervous!

My 1993 4 cylinder YJ currently has 127k miles on it. A while back I noticed a ticking that sounded like it was a rod or coming from the valves. I tore the motor apart checking the rods - the rods were perfect and I didn't notice any marks/scrapes on the metal. I didn't want to mess with the valves since they are hydraulic, so i put the engine back together, changed the oil with 10w30 and added in some lifter quieting fluid in with the oil. There was no change in how loud the ticking was. I know it's common for a 4 cylinder to tick, but what bothers me is when I give it some gas, the ticking gets louder and more aggressive. It is coming from the driver side of the motor right where the valves and injectors are. What could be the problem here? Is it a sticking valve? Bad injectors? Or is it just how the engine is meant to be? I know it's a Jeep and it's born to be loud, but that sound gets quite loud when I give it some gas (2-3.5k RPM).

Thanks for all the advice!

i am thinking valves would be the thing to look at next. but am no engine expert.

It comes from a combination of wear. Wear on the camshaft, lifters, pushrods and then the valve stem. Add it all up and you get some tapping and at 127K not bad unless it is really loud.

How do you get rid of it? Replace some parts and have the head gone through at the machine shop. Replace the push rods and rocker arms. Run a little thicker oil. These old engines have big tolerances and can run straight 30W oil no problem.

Or turn up the stereo and don't worry about it until it quits.

Thanks for the advice! It's not that loud unless I have the hood open looking at the engine. It doesn't bother me much if I'm driving. I talked to a guy at Autozone about it and he said that it was normal for an older engine, but I just wanted to be sure it's nothing serious.

Run some seafoam in your oil, then replace your oil after 100 miles if you would like to quiet it.

Had a little tick on my 2.5L turned out to be the skirt broke on the #4 rear piston, replaced two pistons in the repair, all the crank bearings and seals etc. And had the valves rebuilt. Runs great still has the usual 4cyl tick tho.
