wind or sway?

Hey gang,

does the wind effect your jeeps when its really windy? Sort of blows you around the road a little bit? I'm wondering if this is actually the issue or if the swaying is something else?

I just installed 3.25, and screwed up the track bar installation. If your track bar bushing is bad, or the capture hardware is loose / whole bar is loose, you can be certain there is some road sway happening. Easy way to test it is park it on a smooth flat spot, and w/ the engine running, and reaching through the window, just turn the wheel a fraction one way, and then the other. If the steering wheel moves, and the wheels don't react, then the track bar is an area of concern. OR - your sway bar links are damaged, or even broken. That is completely visual inspection. Just a few thoughts to consider.

well. the track bar bushing was bad, but i had it replaced. how do i inspect the sway bar?

I get blown around a little, I'm pretty certain what you're describing is normal for a vehicle that has the barn-door aerodynamics of the Wrangler. :)

Take your top of you wont get blown around as much.

Wind has much effect on a tall box.

If you get a strong crosswind on the highway, watch out.

LOL, I was just getting ready to mention that we have the aerodynamics of a tool shed. :D

If it only does it when windy, then normal. If you always have trouble keeping it between the lines, then either something's wrong our you need to lay off the SoCo. ;)

haha I was going to say I get blown around like a 2 dollar "women" does in china town lol

Because we have a high center of gravity, for my jeep it's always been the wind. Especially going home on the highway with open space all around. When the wind gets going, my job will sway yes.

We just ran over to Post Falls Idaho in Amy's Jeep. We're getting 30 to 35mph winds and we got blown all over the freeway.
It's like an E ticket ride at Disney land :D

I HATE HATE HATE the wind when in my jeep.

Wind does move me around a bit....considering our profile, I expected worse.

gmercer308 10-09-2009 09:36 AM

It's most likely the wind, I have noticed this issue also. Especially when I have my hard top on compared to my soft top...

Here in Kansas its always windy, were talking 40 mile an hour constant, up 60 MPH gust. I cant barely go 55 in my 4 banger into the wind and im getting thrown all over the road. Nearly into ditches and into the other lanes at times.

I always pray for the days that the wind is going to be at my back, I have a 3.5 hour trip to my parents house and if the wind is helping me out I HOLD 70-75 on the highway in my Sahara and its on 33's... But, if the wind is against anything but at my back its a heck of a fun ride trying to keep it on the road haha. Just a lot of fun to drive a Wrangler, it always has a way of keeping things interesting.

haahhaha yeah try it with 35 x 12.50's and stock gearing! (BTW I'm looking to trade for a set of m/t 33's if anyone is interested) Its not my DD and only sees the highway when the weather is right.

and to stay on topic yes crosswinds are a biotch!

InfernoGirl 10-09-2009 01:42 PM

It's the wind.... Drive a 4x4 Suburban on a highway 65-70mph with crosswinds 40+mph.... Now there's some fun for ya!
