Does taking off your doors chip the paint off the bolts?

Don't bash me...I know Jeepers are about function not looks but I'm not ready to chip all the paint off the bolts removing my doors. I don't see any way around it except replacing them, which I don't mind doing. Do most people just go with the security bolts or can you just soak your stock bolts in something to take the rest of the paint off? Thanks.

You can get security bolts if you want. I removed the bolts and took half the paint off the nuts while doing it so I chucked them. I like being able to take the doors off in a split second and not having to take the nuts off.

Tape the nuts first and use the right size wrench. Should come off with losing paint. Mine are missing some paint...but no one looks in my tool box to see that:D I am with Levinoss, haven't put them on since first taking them off:cool:

nope, one time use.

Um, just to be clear your gonna slide the doors up and off hinges by just removing securing nuts right? Your not talking about unbolting hinges. just want to make sure.

tiny terror 05-24-2009 09:10 AM

Hacksaw and you never have to worry about the bolts again.

texascc 05-24-2009 10:17 PM

Yeah, I know to take the bolts out and not the whole hinges. I'm a newb, not a boob! :D When you say you never put them back on, I'm a little confused. Is there a bolt you can leave in without the nut? I'm sure I'll understand when I take them off. I was planning on doing it this weekend, but it rained like crazy so I didn't get around to it.

jpdocdave 05-24-2009 10:20 PM

you'll understand when you take them off. there's a nut that everyone leaves off. the actual bolt is part of the door, its a stud pin. just slide the doors back in, without putting the nut back.

if you're in an area more prone to theft be a little careful. i've actually known people that have had their doors stolen.

tiny terror 05-24-2009 10:20 PM

The doors will stay on just fine without the nuts on the end of the bolts. I... um.... broke off two of the threads on my doors the second day I had the jeep. I hacksawed off the other two. No problems.

If you live in a bad area then security bolt might be a wise idea. If not then do what tiny said and hacksaw the threads off if you want. Makes it look a ton better not having threads hangin down.

Wow, I never thought of not putting the nuts back on, awesome idea. Wow hacksaw the threads, even better. Great tips guys and girls.

I did the same thing I broke my threads off on one of my pins to, I couldn't tell you where my nuts are now they are long gone

Ahh. You must be married too.

Well I took off the doors today. Just said screw it and didn't bother with taping the bolts. They came off very easy and didn't get too scratched up. Anyways, it is a Jeep and I'm sure it's going to take a beating once I can get it offroad. I love riding with the doors off. It's a little strange at first because I'm allways on the highway and usually doing about 70+ going to work. Looking down at the road zipping by and thinking don't fall out! I wish I didn't have to put them back on at all, but I know I will when rain is predicted. Thanks for the help.

Took my doors off today also.... got going down the road.... heard a couple of "clanks" then remembered I had left the nuts on the fender... oh well...

There's supposed to be bolts on the doors?

huh? gravity seems to work fine for me.

Unless you plan on loop-the-looping your Jeep, you can run nutless. Most married guys have been doing it for years (they leave them in their wives' purses).
If you do some hardcore off-roading, and have to have doors on for some reason (to keep your limbs in the vehicle), MAYBE you'd want them back on. Otherwise, just don't roll it and you'll be fine :) Mark W.
