Clicking Front End?
Hello, I am relatively new to offroading and am looking forward to being part of a forum like this one! I think its great you can ask questions to knowlegable people like yourselves. Seeing as this is my first post plz let me know if i messed something up haha... Anyway heres the problem: When turning and somewhat heavy breaking i can hear a clicking noise comming from both driver and passenger side wheels. It sounds kind of like a pebble is bouncing within the wheels. The clicking usually happens on the outside wheel when turning (if turning left the right wheel clicks) My first instinct was the u-joints so i jacked the front end up and tried to wiggle the tire back and forth. I got no play in the drivers side and a very slight play in the passenger. i went to the driveshaft to see if those u joints could be the problem and the only play i can see is the expected slight rotational movement. Since the clicking also happens when breaking my friend said it could be something caught in the ABS. I checked the rotors and cleaned out any dirt/grass that was stuck but the clicking continues... Can anyone think of anything left that it could be?? Sorry if this post ends up being really long, i jus wanted the problem to be clear
Thanks a lot

I'm doubting this as I see you have described your rig in your signature, but are you locked in the front?

ChilliRed 09-22-2006 10:33 PM

The front is not locked and has stock gears, the clicking has been consistant for several weeks but has recently seemed to get worse. Worse comes to worse i will swap out the u joints seeing as changing the stock ones wont hurt anyway. It almost sounds like a piece of metal is stuck in the wheel and is clicking as the wheel turns. If anyone else has had a similar problem i would much appriciate you opinion.

Hi ChiliRed,

I belong to a Jeep club (North Jersey Jeep Club) and we have monthly rides to Paragon or Rausch Creek, also with 60+ members there is always someone going out on weekends.
Check out our website:

Check the exaust connection to your maniflod If it comes loose or rots, It will hit the front driveshaft, and will bang on it around turns as well. The sound will make the same kind of noise you were describing.

Do you have quick discos? Mine click when i turn or hit bumps. Its no big deal to me. It just holds on to the swaybar and when it pulls it or compresses it itll click.

ChilliRed 10-18-2006 09:32 PM

i ride wit the bars off haha so im pretty sure thats not my problem:D

ccarr51 10-18-2006 09:53 PM

hmmm ive thought about doing that, but I do a lot more on road than offroad and I like to keep the sway bar connected.

ChilliRed 10-18-2006 10:08 PM

yea i do a lot of road driving too seeing as it is my daily driver. It drives like a boat but u get used to it. I cant say it is as safe as keeping em connected tho thats for sure. I only have to drive short distances for the most part; gas limits the traveling more than the dico-ed bars do
