Hardtop storage...

hey guys looking for plans to build a hardtop storage cart/dolly for my TJ top. So... anyone have any plans I can go off of?

lookin for somethin maybe built out of PVC, basically something light weight, but heavy duty enough to hold the weight of the top.

Thanks in Advance.

Don't know if pvc will hold it but I built a storage cart from pipe, 90* fittings, some 45* fittings and casters I got from lowes. Looks just like the one you can buy. Also put some pipe foam over the pipe to work as padding. Screwed it all together and welded the joints. Then welded some tabs to hold the bottom side of the top from sliding out/off.
Probally weighs less than 20lbs.

Looks just like this.....

You could also build one out of 2x4's and add the padding and casters.

I had to get my photobucket account to play nice here are the pics! and If anyone else is intrested in the parts and how to make it let me know I can run you through a brief set-up for them... this was easy...

Can you post how you built it? I've been looking into building one myself.

Wow, that looks so close to the one Distorted and I built. Nice. I need to build one someday. Although I think mine will somehow use clevis pins for easy disassembly since I move frequently.

its actually relatively small and portable. clevis pins would be a nice touch though, but for me its just more parts to keep track of.

Ok here is what you will need to make your Hard Top Storage cart. All pipe used will be 1/2" and threaded on both ends.

2- 27" pipe
1- 6" or 6.5" pipe (I used 6")
4- 12" pipe
4- 45* and 90* pipe elbows
2- 2" or 3" pipe
4- casters and U-bolts (if you want it to be portable on wheels, I used two locking and two free casters)
Pipe insulation (a towel or similar will work, If you don't want to damage your hard top I would suggest getting something to cover the pipe.)

This is for the window support you WILL need!
53" wooden dowel or 2x2 board
2 or 3 plastic coated hooks that can screw into the board/dowel

So lay out all of your supplies that you just got from the local hardware store (home depot or lowes has every thing you need, ACE probably would too)

Take your 27" pipe and screw a 90* elbow onto both ends. take a 12" pipe and screw it onto one side. This side the 12" pipe is attached to is going to be the rear of your cart.

Attach a 45* elbow to the 12" pipe you just threaded, make sure the open threads on the elbow are facing up. Attach another 12" pipe to this along with another 45* elbow facing away from the stuff you just built.

Thread the 6" pipe to the open 45* elbow. With the 6" pipe now attached and the 27" pipe laying flat on the ground, the 6" piece should be sitting above but horizontal with the floor.

from this point you build the exact same thing you just built but with a mirrored image.

If your wondering what the little 2" or 3" pieces, they are for the 90* elbows on the end of the 27" pipes. These little babys are what will hold your top on the cart. MOUY IMPORTANTE! I also put end caps on mine just incase, you don't need these but I opted for them.

From This point you should have your complete frame. I welded all my joints after I fitted them to the top making sure the highest point will not touch your glass.

I then attached the U-bolts and caster wheels to the left and right sides (see the pictures for more details on these.) Oh and I welded them as well so they wouldn't move.

There you go! you now have a standing hardtop storage cart! now put your padding on the areas where the top touches and go about your business!

let me know if you have any more questions or need more pictures!
