Skid plate supporting the tranny transfercase? I want to change fluids.

I have a 1987 Jeep Wrangler that I bought for cheap.

The tranny is LOUD, so I suspected there was no fluid in the tranny.

I unscrewed the drain plus from the manual transmission and WATER came out.:mad: No oil at all.

So now I want to change the tranny, transfer case, and rear differential fluids.

When I was under the Jeep I noticed that the Skid Plate supports the rear of the tranny and transfer case. is this true??

In order for me to get to the drain/fill bolts of the transfer case it seems like I need to take off the skid plate. But how do I take the skid plate off if it is suppose the transmission??

Is there DIY to change the fluid in the transfer case??

Support the rear of the transfer case and drop the skid plate. I used a jack stand.

This would be a good time to replace the mount, too.

Careful removing the skid plate bolts. Soak them well with PB Blaster, etc.

yea your trans mount is broken, the trans mount should be between trans and the skid , there should be an inch or 2 between rear end of trans and the skid, if i am understanding you right..? so... yes the skid supports the trans but there should be no direct skid to trans contact only trans to mount to skid contact... ok now im confusing myself.lol

I'm betting it's not sitting directly on the skid. Just explaining it in a vague manner.

There's no reason to drop the skid to change either the tranny fluid or TCase fluid. Just use a piece of cardboard or something to funnel the fluid away from the skid so that it doesn't run all over. :D You'll want to get one of those hose type funnels that screw onto the bottle of ATF. Also I suggest taking the fill plug out of the Case before you remove the drain plug. Don't want to drain it and then realize that something is wrong with the fill plug and it won't come out.
