Max Tire Size with D35

I just bought a 2005 TJ, X, with a 6 speed. It has the D35 rear axle. I want to lift it an put on larger tires. I was thinking 33/12.50/15. I am concerned if the D35 can handle tires that large. D44s seem to be pretty expensive. So do you people think I can run 33s with the D35? If so, how much lift would I need to run them with a ten inch wide rim (I got some nice rims free from my brother with about 3 3/4" backspacing). If the D35 wont hold up, what should be the maximum tire size for me to run (preferably with a 15 x10 wheel)? My 4 wheeling is usually pretty mild, but sometimes a little rough.
Thanks.

Well here is the good news.. Yes you can run 33x12.50's on the dana 35. In fact you can wheel it that way too, as long as you don't put a locker in it, and don't use a lot of the gas you might keep it alive for a while. As for a lift, you will want 3-4 inches for the 33's. A used dana 44 go's for an avg of 1000 give or take. You most likey would need a new rear drive shaft, but with the lift you might as well do and SYE for the transfer case, which will help to get rid of any vibs you might have. Good luck!

The 8.8 is another option and has worked well for some folks too. Really Almost any upgraded axle is a vast improvement over the dana 35. On that had, even the Super 35 and like kits are a great improvement. I like the dana TJ 44 as you know it will fit, and you can also buy just a factory housing, and build it up as funds allow.
