Cb

Hey everyone!

Going to look into buying a CB. Where does everyone mount them? Is there a certain one that I would be able to mount inside the center console? I really don't want anything out in the open. I say I when what what I really mean is buying a bunch of beer and food or paying one of you guys to do it. Lol

Scampers 09-30-2013 02:10 PM

I was looking at this one. Maybe someone can chime in if it's a good one/worth it.

Amazon.com: Cobra 75WXST 40-Channel CB Radio: Car Electronics

This one is the best bang for your buck, IMO. It comes with everything you need. I have this one in my Jeep, and it doesn't take up much space.

I bought this one too and am pretty happy with it. I also decided to buy a firefly antana quick disconnect to keep it in my jeep when I'm not using it. I'm also in RR if you want to look at it before ordering.

Btw - I have a SWR meter and can help you tune the antana when you are ready.

Fly-by-night 09-30-2013 05:37 PM

Dear God! Tune the antenna? Why cant things just work without having to be so complicated? Thanks NM! I am trusting you guys know a heck of a lot more than I do.

This the one I got with the TeraFlex anatena mount. Works good.

It's actually a lot easier than it sounds and only takes about 10 min. There are several people here able and willing to help you out :)

kenb1023 09-30-2013 08:12 PM

Real easy to tune. Many of us have the meter to do it.

I do not want to hijack your thread, but what cb's do you guys recommend?

It really depends on what you want, and where you want to mount it. Here is a site that has a ton of information, and they have some really good prices. If you're able to make the meetup on Wednesday you can check out what everyone has.

I heard good things about them... In fact I just ordered one too :) I have a couple old CBs but no real good place to mount them. Plus I got a Firestik antenna and all the other stuff from Amazon, to hook it up. Total came out to under $150.

Scampers 09-30-2013 11:27 PM

FedEx tracking received!

For what most of us use a CB for (Trail communications) these are perfect. When you put the hand set away all that shows of a CB is the connector. Range is not as good as some bigger CBs but finding room for them is difficult and they are out in the open tempting thieves. On the open road I get a good signal up to 3 miles away and when on the trail about one mile depending on the terrain. If you get a quick disconnect for the antenna then you literally remove all signs of having a CB. They are great for when in town and parking lots for not advertising that you have a CB. Just make sure you get your SWRs as low as possible. Most often high SWRs is the reason for poor radio performance.

X2 what ken said, I have them on both jeeps and mounted them under the center console so I just leave the mike in the center console :beerme:

If you are going to be at TPs tonight, I can show you how mine is set up. It's pretty simple but I can give you a couple pointers if you want them...

Don't know how close to Edgewood you are but if you are in the area let me know and I can help you out. PM me if you need

Fly-by-night 10-03-2013 02:13 PM

I am ordering the Cobra 75 on Amazon. What else do I need? The antenna, the spring, the coaxial?

Yes, you will need an antenna and a coax cable. You will also need to decide how you want to mount the antenna to the vehicle and how you want to mount the handset in the cab. You don't have to buy a spring but can if you want to (verify that it is rated for the length of your antenna). You may also want an antenna quick disconnect so the you can remove the antenna when not in use (this is not required, just personal preference).

RoufusTBarleysheath 10-03-2013 02:55 PM

You also need an SO-239 connector stud mount. Items like the spring and the quick disconnect are optional. I would recommend the disconnect. Also, you might want to consider getting the coax locally, especially if you want to run the wire through your tailgate.

Needs: Cobra 75 (obviously), coax, SO-239 stud mount, antenna, and an antenna mount for mounting the antenna on the Jeep.
Optional: quick disconnect, spring.
