Cargo Carrier (hitch mount) Info?
Hello to you all,
I've recently taken my wife & daughter to the Smokies for 5 days & did a lot of sight seeing. We took the F-150 Super Cab because of the no storage issue with the tj. While going thru Cades Cove we noticed several jeeps with cargo carriers mounted to the hitch & we quickly realized we have to have one. We would have enjoyed the sight seeing so much more from the topless tj. Therefore I'm looking into purchasing a hitch mounted cargo carrier. I've found that there's several different price ranges, do any of you have experience with these and what do you think I should look for? I certainly want to get one that's quality built. Any & all recommendations will be appreciated. Thank y'all

i have one and i am very happy with it. they give you the cargo space you need w/o sacrificing people space. i like and would recommend the style pictured below.

If there is a Harbor Freight in the area you can normally get an aluminum carrier on sale for about $60. Its nice and light.

Thanks for the response y'all, & especially for the Pic jgano23. I think that would be ideal. I will certainly check out Tractor Supply (they never crossed my mine). No Harbor Fright in my area that I'm aware of, but I have no problem with ordering online if I find what I want. Thanks again for your replies

Look into the water proof bags for the hitch hauler. I got a used carrier, but bought a new bag and it works great! We made 2 15 hour trips last year, both trips driving through rain at some point, and everything inside the bag stayed bone dry.

I have a cargo carrier and I use the hell out of it!! I am actually having a hitch put on my second Wrangler this weekend so I can use it with either one. (Next month the Commander gets a hitch for the same reason... beats hauling bags in and out of the roof carrier!) Do get a waterproof bag, and a cargo net (specifically for the carrier size) both available at Checker auto, Pep Boys, Shucks, etc... in fact they even have the cargo carrier at some of these places.

WARNING!!! This hitch mounted carrier extends the length of your vehicle by a few feet (3ft maybe) and you WILL hit it hard if you go over large objects, cross ditches or enter to/exit from steep driveways! Ask me how I know... I have to remind myself before I approach any obstacle that would normally not even be on the radar.

I agree with the warning.......Luckily my fathers vehicle did not dent when I backed into it!

Thanks MCDavis, I like the idea of the water proof bags. & Thanks for the Warning toplessartist, I'm sure that banging the carrier against the road surface would cause some dirty words. I haven't decided on what kind to get yet. I looked at our local TSC but they didn't have the basket style with the rails (which is what I think I want) like the one above. So I've been looking & reading online. THANKS again for all your input
