What is this part? It is leaking fluid....

I am a newbie....just bought my 2000 Wrangler from a friend.

I have a fluid leaking on the front left fender and underneath the hood and I don't know what it is. It appears to be coming from the part in the picture (circled in blue) but I don't know what the part is.

I did a search and found nothing. Maybe I don't know what to look for.

I also bought the Haynes manual but when labeling the engine parts it skipped this part.

Any ideas what this is? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That looks like your front Diff breather tube. Possible leaking gear oil.

It is a vent tube...which one ...I don't remember off the top of my head, and I cant go look at my heep at the moment.

What does the tube go down to? "trace it down".

What type of fluid is it leaking? Color of fluid?

That is the Front Diff vent tube. It's sticking a little higher up then the stock location though!

Thanks for the responses. The fluid it's leaking looks like really clean and realy thin oil....it's hard to tell the color as most of it's on the engine parts near this tube.

Now that I know what's leaking, any advice on how to fix it?

I'm new to Jeeps so I'm just getting my feet wet.

My JK was blowing gear oil out the front breather. Seems that it was overfilled at the factory. Dealer drained some out and no more gear spray.

Bingo. That's always going to be the case in the front. The front diff is sealed basically because of the seals in the diff itself. So the extra fluid has no where to go when the shafts are in it so it pressurizes and comes out the breather.

Good to know. I will research how to drain some fluid and how to check when it is really full instead of overfilled. Thank you all for your help :)

If you can get a hold of a fluid syringe from the parts store then that will help you not have to crack the diff. Does your axle have an aftermarket diff cover on it? If so then the fill plug is probably located higher. You can take the fill plug out and see if anything runs out. That's a good sign it's too full. :D
