31 10.50s and 15 x 8 low backspace rims vs axles wheel bearings...

I Have a TJ (98 sahara) and 31 10.5 wrangler gsa rubber i am currently running with a 1.25 wheel spacer due to suspension rubbing (in paticular the uh control arm i think it is)... the wheel spacer made it clear, but i can't get the @#$% things to stay tight..... common issue... i am thinking about a 15x8 rim with 3.25"-3.5" backspacing but i am concerned about axle/wheel bearing troubles.. any feedback anyone???

I dont have them yet but alot of jeeps
run soft 8s ,They are 15x8 with the back space your talking about
from 3 to 4inch and have never heard anyone blame
them for any bearing trouble

3.75bs works really well on 15x8's.

A friend said I could have a set of his extra 15x8 with a 4.75 backspacing... if i run 31 10.5 will they rub? That seems like a big backspacing...

I've got 5.5 backspace with 31x10.5 no rub.

Mine 8' wide also. Can't figure out why alot of posters get rubbing. No lift also. Only thing I can think of is their front axles are off center like what sometimes happens with bad lifts.

Idk, I always figured alot of the folks who rub on stock rims with 31's are running 7" wide rims...... <<<(my natural state)

Good point. Less rim width more tire bulge.

I don't think that "bad lifts" are the reason. I think that it is lifts in general. I had 31x10.5r15 on stock 15x7 wheels and had zero rubbing...even off road. I put on a 2-1/2" lift and now get rubbing on the passenger side lower control arm. This is because the track bar is pulling the front axle to the drivers side so now on full right turn I get rubbing. All I need to fix the problem is an adjustable track bar to bring my axle to center again. I don't think any 2-1/2" lifts come with those.

Why do some jeepers get tire rubbing with 10.5 tires and some don't. Some with lifts some without. I have not seen a post yet that explains this. My theory is the jeeps with rubbing have the axle pulled off center for some reason.

Mine rubbed with the stock alloy rims with 31x10.50.

Now that I have 15x8 w/3.75 backspacing steelies i can turn forever and no rub whatsoever. Tires also stick out of the flares a bit. But that looks SWEET!

The answer that many have about rubbing or not on 31" 10.5 15 tires will directly change depending on the tires you have. My Dick Cepek tires rub on both sides and my Big O tires in the past do not. It would be helpful to post here what brand your 31" tires are on your stock ride and if they will rub.

31x10.5x15 BFG a/t's on 15x8 with 5.5 backspace. No rub.

I've got a 2000 Sahara. It had 16x7 factory alloys. When I first put a 2'' lift and went to 265's (32'') it scrubbed when I turned it deep because of the wider tires. Went to 4'' lift and of course went to 285's (33'') and it scrubbed more because they were a lilttle bit wider. Now with an added body lift, 15x8 Eagle alloys with good backspacing on 35x12.5's no scrubbing.

InfernoGirl 02-19-2010 08:10 AM

That's a good looking Sahara! I think Doc is right, differences in actual tire width vs. stated size. I just put 33x12.5's on 4"bs soft 8's on mine. No lift yet, but with the bs I don't rub. I really hope they don't rub when she's lifted.....
