Winch Mount - Regular or Raised?
I'm buying a Smittybilt XRC8 with synthetic line, and I was asked if I want the raised mount. Is there an advantage to a raised mount?
click on the thumbnail photo to see a flat mounting plate.
that is a cheapo universal plate I got from some online winch store for $50 or $60. It is a thin plate that lays flat on the crossmember/bumper. It was advertised as a 1/4" plate but they lie!!! at least according to my ruler. lol.
It sits forward a bit in order to clear the factory swaybar that sits immediately behind it. Notice how the front two bolts for the feet of the winch can be seen underneath the mounting plate in front of the bumper face.
you don't want that kind of mounting plate. I only used the winch maybe 12 times before the winch died (that particular winch in the picture was a cheapo too) and when I removed it I could see how much the mounting plate had warped.
A raised winch plate allows the winch to sit back closer to the grill. Its raised to clear the swaybar.
If you can afford it, get a good 1/4" thick plate WARN or comparable winch plate. They are lsited at about $220+ on warns website but you can find them for less... I paid $150-$170 I think. The WARN are raised and are very strong with reinforced gusseting so it won't bend or deform I don't even have a front sway bar and I use the raised warn plate. It will work with standard winch feet bolt pattarns. I used a warn plate with a ramsey winch and it lined up great.
Thanks for the explanation and the recommendation. I'll keep an eye out for a Warn mount as you suggested...
