LEaking box or line cant tell. How would i fix this? Heres a pic:

Looks like the box and that upper seal will only get worse! It sucks! Lucas will slow the process but is only a temporary fix. You will need to replace sometime.
If your steering isn't loose, I would try to prolong but if you are in the mood to get dirty, have at it.
If it was the hoses, there should be a dark shiny area on the hose, leading me to believe it's the box.

So you can just replace the upper seal?

I remember reading that it is more work than its worth...and you might not be able to replace it good enough anyway. Depending on the year of jeep, it would be a good time to upgrade to a durango box.

Its a 97 jeep tj

PiePuncher 10-07-2013 02:57 PM

Easier and more reliable to replace the box

FloridaJeepers 10-07-2013 03:13 PM

May sound stupid but can i put rtv where it is leaking to stop it?

PiePuncher 10-07-2013 04:54 PM

No. It won't work. Lucas power steering may help stop it a little but in the long run you will be changing it out. The only fix is to replace it, anything else will be a bandaid. I have used the Lucas and it just prolongs the inevitable.

I had good luck w/ the Lucas in my pickup truck; 3 years, and its still not leaking.

FloridaJeepers 10-07-2013 07:49 PM

Ok. I had some extra AT205 reseal. So i put some in the reservoir!

I just went through this exact situation. Leaking upper seal of steering gear box. I tried Lucas and it may slow it but in the end the seal needs replaced. You can buy a new seal kit but to replace it you must remove the entire box, and since you have to remove it anyway you are better off replacing the box. Often times when the upper seal is leaking the bearings in the box will soon follow. You can get a rebuilt box: Lares part #1353 from rockauto.com for 58 + 35 core charge. It is a pretty simple install, start spraying down your pitman arm link a week before and rent a good pitman pulled from your local auto parts store (that way if it breaks you just take it back in, they have a warranty on it). Stu has a great write up on the replacement here

You may also consider looking into and reading about the durango steering box upgrade, here is a guide on that

Whatever you choose, good luck and feel free to pm me if you have further questions.

My TJ was leaking and I used Lucas and not in a drop in 18 months.

jherrington 10-08-2013 10:23 PM

putting lucas and other stop leak stuff is NOT good for your pump and other components.

I replaced my leaky box with one from autozone. comes with a lifetime warranty and costs about $140.
