Is synthetic oil ok for my motor?

I know you may have been asked this question before but, what do you guy think about using synthetic oil in your Rubi? I used it in my Cherokee, which had the same engine, and had no problems that I am aware of. Is it, or will it be, as good with my Rubi? I use Castrol Edge motor oil.

Big Sarge 10-07-2013 02:10 PM

yep it will be fine, as would conventional oil. Just change it regularly no matter what you use.

Ya I feel horrible at the thought of letting my jeep go to 10,000 miles before an oil change. One of amsoils synthetics is rated at that many

Semper Fi03 10-07-2013 02:18 PM

Thanks for the quick answers, and I feel the same about the 10,000 miles. It never did my Cherokee wrong so, I thought it would be ok with this Rubi.

I've used Mobil 1 for the last 60,000 miles with an average interval of 5,000 miles.

I will disclose this as I and few other experience this when switching over to Synthetic...As soon as I did, I got a valve cover leak and the theory is that because of the viscosity difference, synthetic was a able to seep out where conventional oil could not.

I replaced my valve cover gasket as many of my bolts were loose...probably could have retorque and been fine. All is good now and I am still using synthetic motor oil (whatever is on sale).

Personally I change my oil and filter every 3K, clean oil is better than extending the dirty synthetic oil. IMO.

My jeep manual says oil change at every 7500 mi thats a 04 Rubicon. I use Mobil one SYN and I change every 10k oil is still clear and clean when I do proboly could go 15k.

bigcat 10-09-2013 01:57 PM

I don't run anything but Mobil1 in my vehicles...cheap insurance. I track the miles, but usually change it when it gets dirty

kuda0005 10-09-2013 02:01 PM

I've done Mobil 1 synthetic in every car I owe. My 11 Jk is the newest car I've owned (when compared to the current year)....meaning I've been lucky enough with older engines not to have the gasket "leak" that was mentioned on this thread. I replace every 5000 mi

Rubicondon53 10-09-2013 02:30 PM

You can use any motor oil you want, just change it often and use a good filter.. Often is the key word... For many a decade I used Castrol GTX and changed every 3,000 miles, never any oil related problems.. around 2000 I switched to Mobil 1, synthetic, and now change every 6 to 7 thousand miles.. I had it analyzed once after a 7000 mile drain, and it came back all good. I also use a WIX filter...

Old Dogger 10-09-2013 05:27 PM

I run Pennzoil Platinum and change it every 5,000 miles.
There is one negative when changing over from Conventional to Synthetics. If you have higher mileage, say 75,000 or more, then changing over may cause you to have some oil leaks. This is a very common problem when doing this, just a FYI.

OlYellerTJ 10-09-2013 09:01 PM

I picked up my '02 with 103K on the clock. The PO used Pennz Platinum, and he was an engineer--who am I to argue..I kept using it with 5k OCI (which I'd done for years w/dino oil in other vehicles).

Anyway, I was getting a better deal for a while on Mobil 1, so I switched. Until I got a persistent top end engine tick on start up. Back to Pennz Platinum and virtually no more top end noise. Today I turned 159K on the clock. The engine and oil pan are damp, it marks its territory a little but I don't lose enough oil between 5k changes to need to top it off. I do check, really!

YMMV, and invariably will...

Advance auto has a deal going, well last week at least. 5 quarts of oild plus a filter for ~$30. Of course ya need one more but not bad at all for Mobil1

rockey8279 10-09-2013 10:28 PM

I use mobile 1 on all my vehicles. I have a costco card, and probable 3x a year, their coupon book has a $9 off coupon/case limit of 4. With the coupone, it ends up being $27/case.

Gonzos Wrangler 10-10-2013 07:18 AM

Jiffy Lube's recommendation of oil changes every 3,000 miles is a myth. BMW's recommend changing the oil every 12,000 miles or once a year on their vehicles. Jeep and Fords recommend every 7,500 miles now.
I change mine anywhere from 5,000 to 6,000 miles.

bigcat 10-10-2013 08:12 AM

^You prolly need to change Jiffy's bulk crappy oil every 3k!

Rubicondon53 10-10-2013 08:20 AM

^ x 10. The Detriot Diesel DD15 engines require oil and filter change intervals every 50,000 miles, provided one uses the proper spec oil , and Detroit warrants the engine for 750,000 miles... I'm not suggesting these little gas engines we have should be drained at that interval, but I am suggesting one reads the label on Mobil 1 , let it go for 9 thousand miles, then have your old oil analyzed.. Over your lifetime, you'll save thousands of dollars by not needlessly changing your oil... I, trust science... ;)

Wodalo 10-10-2013 12:07 PM

I use mobile1, high mileage 10/30 synthetic and mopar filter and change the oil well before it is needed... Overkill I'm sure.
