2009 Wrangler X JK! Stock Radio or Aftermarket Upgrade?

How do you folks like your CD/Radio in your JK? I'm thinking about possibly Upgrading to an Aftermarket system with Sub-Woofer. Something like a Kenwood or Alpine system.

Have any of you done this yet? BTW, anyone know what the Max Wattage is on the Stock Single CD system? Most of the ones I looked at Best Buy today, were rated 200 Max Watts.

Thanks in advance for any input!

Cheers!

Yea I am not too fond of the stock stereo system and head unit. Music doesn't sound as lively and clear as it should.

iamagolfspaz 08-17-2009 03:21 PM

Love my stock Infinity. 350+ watts i believe.

i tell you what I am not crazy about, thats the stock speakers in the sound bar. I know I am a bit different (being a bass player) but I have notice the bass signal distorts them a bit. I am really thinking about upgrading those speakers first. I think the stock radio is fine, since I mostly use my xmp3. I need to hardwire the power supply and I am putting in a sure connect so I can bypass the direct aux connect. I want to save the aux for my iPod.

UnionOffRoad 08-17-2009 04:26 PM

I think the stock speakers are crap (I dont have the high end stereo option). I would like change the speakers in the sound bar as well. I have a set of 6 1/2 Focals, but they dont match up to the 3 bolt jeep setup. Would like to know if there is an adapter plate of some kind, that would be cool...

Cons_Table 08-17-2009 04:28 PM

i dont own a JK, but i upgraded the deck in my TJ with a kenwood. i also in stalled a vdp soundbar which puts out great sound and hits a wide range of frequency considering it is a six speaker sound bar. for bass, i built a custom box for a 10" kicker solobaric

rj5570 08-17-2009 04:33 PM

I have made my own adapters. Its pretty easy to get things like that to fit, just need to be creative.

what years is your jeep, mine is 2009 and the tweeters on the dash has a really nice high. the front speakers are not too bad either.

but I am truly thinking of getting an amp for the radio, replace all the speakers make sure the wattage is balanced and right, so I can get the volume I want.

I thought about throwing a crossover in or making my own sub, but its about space really. I have to think this thru more. I really love hearing those low bombs from Phil Lesh! Lesh Philing, More Bass! :)

I think I will spend some time on it this winter. There are some nice after market subs that have their own cross over in them.

Cons_Table 08-17-2009 04:36 PM

ya there are always ways to make it fit. my jeep is a 99 and i bought the vdp soundbar because my jeep didnt have a soundbar when i bought it. if it had came with a soundbar i prlly would have taken a different route and just upgraded the speakers using the factory bar

Cons_Table 08-17-2009 04:39 PM

as far as subs go, i have seen ppl that have put a subwoofer in the bottom of the rear bench seats. and ive also considered a making a new box with 8" subs to save space also

rj5570 08-17-2009 09:55 PM

I would love to figure out away to put a sub in the middle of the dash facing out, I had an element that had one, was great, but I cant think of away of doing it. I think I am going to make one to fit right behind the center box

inzgary 08-17-2009 10:19 PM

I like my stock sound system but the subwoofer was a pain when I removed my soaked carpets today. It holds the rug down under it and those plastic bolts seem to be a unique size and i'm afraid I might strip them if I try to remove the sub. Anyone happen to know the right size socket for them?

Blackbeard1718 08-18-2009 11:42 PM

I ended up installing these in the Front...

Alpine SPR-17S Component Speakers (link)

and these in the Soundbar...

Alpine SPR-17C Coaxial Speakers (link)

The installer said that while these Speakers are EXCELLENT, I still need an Amp to make them work like they should. That's my Next-Month/Next-Paycheck Project! I won't need a Sub-Woofer now, after hearing how much Bass the Alpine's put out. More than enough for my needs!

The installer gave me back my Factory Speakers, and they are indeed, CRAP! Of all of the cars I've had, these are the worst Speakers I've seen/heard yet.

I really like the Component setup, because it has the Crossovers and the Tweeters with the set. Everything in one nice neat little package.

Cheers!

so (you have a 2009 X right?) did you leave in the tweeters on the dash? I hate paying to have someone isntall audio stuff. While in highschool and college, I made extra cash installing radios, speakers. also have done all the XM radio installs for friends, hiding wires etc.

anyways, I would like to know more about your setup.

Yes, I have an '09 Yellow X JK 2-Dr. Bought it July 10th, and have been lovin' it ever since. No, the Component Package (SPR-17S) came with Alpine Tweeters too, and the Stock Tweeters on the dash were replaced with these. Right now, I have the Component Package installed up front (includes 2 6-1/2" Speakers, 2 Tweeters, and 2 Crossovers), and the 2 6-1/2" Coaxial Speakers installed in the Sound Bar. The 4 6-1/2" Speakers had Dynamat installed as well, when the Speakers were installed. I'm going to have the Amp installed either under the Passenger Seat, or under the Rear Seat, depending on how small an Amp I buy.

FWIW, I went with the Alpine's, because the Component Speakers have 330-Watts Peak Power with 110-Watts RMS, while the Coaxial Speakers have 300-Watts Peak Power with 100-Watts RMS. The Stock RES Radio can't power these Speakers adequately, which is the reason I need the Amp, to boost the extra needed power to properly run them.

I hear ya on the, "Paying someone to install Audio", but there are two things I NEVER mess with anymore..... Plumbing & Automotive Electrical..... in that order! I tried 'em both before, and really SUUUUCK at it! http://www.maxi-scoots.com/postnuke/...iratelaugh.gif

Hope that answers some of your questions! If not, just let me know, and I'll be happy to provide some more info.

Cheers!

ya after this winter, I am never messing with plumbing again either!

This setup sounds pretty nice. What amp are you looking at? I'd like to find one that'll fit in/under the dash (where the stock MOPAR one is supposed to go).
Did the tweeters in the SPR-17S package fir into the oiginal dash mounts?

Thanks,

thaduke2003 09-24-2009 03:11 PM

Just a heads up- newer CANBUS-controlled Chryslers require a rather spendy adapter to properly integrate an aftermarket radio- over $100, last time I checked.
Otherwise, upgrading speakers does a little bit, but won't be huge. If you're looking into adding an aftermarket system, go big or go home. From all the JK/LK's I've seen through our dealership, anyone who's gone all the way, replaced the deck, and amped a set of aftermarket speakers are the only ones who got real results in terms of output and quality- Mark W.

Welcome Aboard, Shipmate! http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v3...eshipffmk0.gif

I went with the Rockford-Fosgate 400W 4-Ch Punch Amp. I had it mounted under the Driver's Seat, on a raised rubber mat, to keep water from collecting under it. It's not screwed down, so I'm able to slide it out of the way, in case I need to get at the Drain Plug under the seat.

I didn't want to mount it under the Passenger Seat, in case some of my 6' tall friends slam their Size 12's on it, while getting into the back seat.

Also, I didn't want it under the Rear Seat, since I use that for Cargo Space, and didn't want to limit what I could carry. As it was anyway, the Rear Seat was too low for the Amp to be installed there.

The RF Amp is 13"x9", so it's not going to fit behind the dash.

Yes, the Tweeters fit in the same Pods on the Dash, as the Factory ones did.

I was having to crank up my volume to about 30-32 before the Upgrade, and now, I only need it at about 13-15. The Amp boosted the Bass on my Alpines, and they are PERFECT! I don't need a Sub-Woofer with the setup I have. I've got the Bass set at --, which is right in between the Max/Min setting. Any more Bass, and I'd be dropping Nuts and Bolts off of my Jeep! http://www.maxi-scoots.com/postnuke/...iratelaugh.gif

The Total Cost for the Upgrade, which includes 4 6.5" Speakers, 2 Tweeters, 2 Crossovers, Amp, Wiring, Labor, & Speaker/Amp Warranties, was $1,200.

I have the Single CD RES Radio, but hardly ever play a CD or listen to the Radio. I just use my iPod with the Aux Jack in the front. I wanted to put my $$$ in Speaker/Amp Upgrades, rather than just a Head Unit. When I'm driving topless, I get a big smile on my face when I've got some Jimmy Buffett coming out of my new system!

FINS UP! http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/9...miley236hw.gif

The deep 15mm six sided socket works perfect and does not damage the nut.

rj5570 09-28-2009 09:55 PM

Ok, I yanked out the RES stereo. POS IMO.

I installed the Alpine CDA-105. I am going to put in the same speakers that Blackbeard did next month with a pay check LOL

Right now I am trying to figure out a subwoofer. I might wait to get the new speakers to see if I get enough bass. I dont have my back seat in and probably wont unless I start dating a chick with a kid. lol. but I like to figure out a sub that will take up no space. I am a bass player and I need room for my Ameg stack.
