HELP! I have a 2009 Jeep Wrangler X that I pull with a Class C Winnebago. On a trip a couple of months ago, I experienced a feeling that the jeep breaks were locking up, especially at the beginning of the trip while going around a curve. It felt like someone was stepping on the break and releasing it a couple of seconds later. It happened once or twice in succession but did not recur for the remainder of the trip. On my most current trip the problem worsened. When leaving Payson. AZ I was going down a hill with a curve and my jeep brakes apparently locked up for about two seconds, then released. The problem didnít repeat the rest of the way to Deming. Upon leaving Deming, the lockup occurred again going around a curve. Leaving Ruidoso, again, a lockup when turning a shallow curve. A few minutes later, going down a hill in a straight trajectory, the brakes locked up again (2-3 seconds) so severely that I drug the jeep for about 10 yards. I pulled over and went through the process of placing the jeep back into TWD and then putting it back in tow mode. The rest of the trip was uneventful. I stopped at a Jeep dealer in Santa Fe, explained the situation and they ( 25 years experience?)had no clue as to what was going on. One other thing that may or may not be related to the problem. When starting the Jeep, momentarily the ESP/BAS indicator comes on along with an icon showing a car skidding (normal). However, in my Jeep, those indicators occasionally pop up while driving, sometimes staying on for several miles before going off. There is also a possibility Iím somehow not setting the Jeep up properly for towing. Here is the sequence I follow which pretty much follows the manual (1) Ignition on ACC (2) Transmission in neutral (3) transfer case to neutral (4) transmission to park (5) emergency break off. My only deviation is I donít start the Jeep to make sure its in neutral (Itís fairly obvious when the shift knob is in the neutral position) and I donít disconnect the negative battery terminal (I need power for when I use the brake buddy). To answer an anticipated question someone might have, I verified the brake freeze up was not the result of a brake buddy malfunction. I also verified that my tow hookups were proper (no binding). Any ideas would be appreciated.

Could it be braking on a bump or curve

I just got a Class C Winnebago and want to tow my 2005 TJ, 6 speed, 4L about 4k miles with lots of mountains. I have no setup yet and would appreciate any help and or suggestions. Reading some of the other threads it looks like I need or should have a brake buddy. Are they hard to hook up and what is a good towbar ? Thanks

I too will be towing, a 2005 TJ behind a Class C Winnie. Can you tell me what kind of towbar and brake buddy you have and if you like them both ? Thanks

Just out of curiosity when your towing that Jeep does the odometer on the Jeep still show it racking up miles ?

How did you verify this? If something's locking up your brakes, and you have a device designed to hit the brakes remotely... The manual may also recommend pulling the battery to disable the brake booster for this very reason.

I am taking this quote literally. Ignition should not be on ACC. There is a position that unlocks the steering but does not energize any of the electronics. IF you are actually using ACC and IF the traction aiding crap is energized and working, and IF while towing, the front end scrubs in a turn (it will) then the brakes may be electronically applied. I tow this way but am not blessed with that Govt. mandated "stuff". I tow my '05 Rubicon this way and the front tire wear increases because of the rear overhang of the camper will cause the Jeep front end to travel in a wider arc than it would under its own power. The traction controls are sensitive enough to respond to this if they are powered up.
