Carmax - Has anybody

Has anybody had the experience of purchasing a vehicle from them, Good or Bad.
I'm a noob on the site and have found it very helpful.
There is a nice 2012 4dr low miles I'm interested in and just looking for some feedback. Thanks

I purchased my Liberty from them.

LOVED the experience.

Do your research.... I got mine for a heck of a deal because they had mis-priced it. It was a 65th Anniversy Edition with Selec-trac (instead of Command-trac) and a few other options....but they just priced it as a base Sport because that is what the model was based on.

It would be like pricing a loaded Freedom Edition with LSD as a base Sport.

I also took it back to Carmax to get a written estimate when it was time to trade it in.

I just sold them my 2011 GTI, and before that 05 Denali, 98 Vette, 06 SRT8. I purchased from them an 06 Honda Pilot that im still driving. I would say they pay fair value for your trade and Ive had nothing but good experiences when I've dealt with them.

My sons have purchased their three cars from them and loved it. Their father also talked them into buying the extended warranties, and they got lots of stuff fixed using it, and they always got free loaner cars while the work was being done.

I took my last van there for an estimate and I plan on going again on Monday to get an estimate on this van so I know how much to charge my dad. :D

I bought my prior car from them, great experience all around.

I bought my 2007 JK from the Carmax in Des Moines, IA, this past November. I found it on the website, called and set up an appointment for a test drive. They pulled it off the lot until I got there. They even welcomed me on their LED monitors around the showroom.

The staff was very friendly and very accommodating, almost to a fault. Their price was about $1,500 less than NADA and KBB, and they offered me more for my trade-in than I was expecting.

What was unexpected was that there was no push at all to buy it. There is no negotiation. The price is the price. If I didn't like the Jeep, I could leave and they wouldn't chase me down. Basically, the sales staff "facilitates" the sale, but don't expect a lot of knowledge about particular models (My salesperson didn't know anything about Jeeps.)

The only pressure I felt - and it was minor - was to buy their extended warranty. I don't buy those things, and I was asked three separate times by three separate people along the purchasing process. After the third time, I whispered in my salesperson's ear that I would walk out if the warranty was mentioned again, and it wasn't.

The only other hiccup was that the Jeep had arrived that morning, and they didn't have a chance to detail it. So, they asked me to come back so it would be "perfect" when I left with it. The one pretty-good-sized scratch had been buffed out when I picked it up.

Unless you're like the "art of the deal," Carmax is a hassle-free experience. I didn't feel that I was being snookered. I felt like I got a fair deal, and I'll probably purchase from them again.

Bought several cars from them, NEVER had a problem!

mikeinoh 10-11-2013 11:53 AM

Got an offer from them for my vehicle before I went Jeep shopping. Price they offered was a little lower (not bad though) than I thought and it was no pressure. The only thing I did not like abot the whole deal was getting a bank note rather than a check, and I had title in hand. I still did not quite understand that process. I would understand if it wasn't paid off, but when I could just sign over the title right there it didn't make sense. I would've had to wait three to five days to get money for a down payment on the jeep and would've been without a vehicle for that time and I just couldn't do that.

So far everyone has seemed to have had no issues with them, makes me feel better.
So if someone got their extended warranty the work is done at CarMax and not at a dealer?

TJOJKU 10-11-2013 01:20 PM

I have bought a Ford f250 and Ford expedition from them. Both good experiences. This was several years ago. Still have the f250. Prices were reasonable. My Dad bought a Mustang from them. He had tires replaced about a year later, took car to have tires rotated and backs were shot less than 10k miles. Took to a mechanic and the rear end was bent. I have been looking at trucks on their site lately and prices aren't as good of a deal as they used to be. High mileage trucks for high prices. Do your research

i sold my WRX to carmax. easiest thing i have ever done and the people are actually nice.

i have friends that have purchased vehicles from them without an issue and a friend from college still works for carmax at their founding location and loves the organization.

Never heard of them, always used Chrysler dealers.

Is this a nationwide dealership?

You've never heard of CarMax? Wow... Yes, nationwide used (with a few new) car dealer. They also do repair work (a lot of people don't know that).

I'm going to go there to get a second opinion before i trade my vehicle in for my new jeep that is coming in a few weeks.

spinlock 10-11-2013 03:15 PM

They are definitely "No Haggle" regarding their pricing. IMO, their prices are reasonable but not the best. The best is probably going to take some haggling somewhere else. I've gone twice with friends. Once purchase with tradein and one sale only, and it was a clean transaction in both cases.

The local Carmax used to have a lot of new Jeeps a couple of years ago but that seems to have changed.

robchad67 10-11-2013 03:30 PM

Yes! Awesome story- I bought my wife's turbo beetle convertible from them- the price advertised was 9995 it was a huge steal. I told the sales guy the price was wrong and way off and he insisted no haggle pay what see! The car was kbb 19995 and I kept insisting the price was off and to please adjust it. Was flatly informed by the manager to either pay for the car or leave and the price wasn't negotiable. Called credit union and paid them a check and waited for the car to arrive.
The car shows up, I head over and get the package together and then get all stare at the contract- and refuse to give me the car. I paid for the car- contract was signed and we headed to general manager who after 30 minutes handed me the keys....

Hartman3216 10-11-2013 03:48 PM

I used them to get an estimate on my '07 300. Was able to use that written estimate to get more out of the dealership I bout my '13 JKU from.

No haggle, no negotiating, 3 day take it back if you don't like it program. However, if you have a trade in, be careful...they tend to low ball you.

dgsholar 10-11-2013 04:36 PM

My Brother and Daughter both bought there. Both got warranties. My daughter is getting an entire rear Diff and axle replaced on her Ford Expedition, free & yep free loaner.

I've never bought, but I've looked many times... and I always get my trade values there. I think their trade values are pretty spot on, at least in my dealings they were right at if not better than KBB, Edmunds, etc. I believe CarMax is the 2nd largest auto auction company in the US. They tout themselves as knowing the true value of your car... YMMV.

If I were in the market for a used car, I'd definitely give them a look. But if you know specifically what you're looking for, and have patience you can always beat their deal, but if they have what you want... I'd buy it. The service and peace of mind are worth a few extra bucks.

Local Carmax is (or was anyway) a Chrysler new car dealer. Bought our '97 Grand Cherokee from them at a better price than anyone else in the Atlanta area. No haggle and relatively hassle free. They did reasonably good warranty work - no complaints.

Knuckles65 10-12-2013 07:25 AM

I've had a good experience at Carmax as well.

I bought my 2001 Mustang Bullitt Gt from them and had zero issues with Carmax or the car.

Being an 11 year old car and third owner (when I bought it), I bought their extended warranty. I'm glad I did because the first summer I had it, the A/C went out. I had it fixed at Ford. Completely replaced about every component in the entire A/C system - my cost out of pocket? $50! Thank you extended warranty!

The CarMax here in Norcross, GA is a DJC dealer as well (not all are). I worked with Reggie and he was great, but in the end he was 2nd out of 6 dealerships here in the SE I worked with. Had I not had another dealer get really aggressive on price, I would have bought from Reggie. They gave me a good price on my trade as well. The downside is that they sell the CarMax warranties, and I wanted the Chrysler Max Care Lifetime warranty. That's OK, you can just contact Mike Nobel for his super warranty deals. They also don't do mods and usually won't work it into the financing if that's important to you - but for straight vehicle purchase price and experience, I was impressed.:thumb:

Well I missed out on the Jeep, I seen it on their web site for about a week and went and looked at it on a couple day's ago, it was really clean for a 2012 with 11k miles on it, I went home did some research on it and here about CarMax and decided to go back last night and get it and it was gone, go figure. They were very apologetic and I understood because they can't just hold it waiting for someone to make a decision, it was shipped to another dealer for someone else to look at it so if that falls thru they will call me. I'll keep looking though. Maybe get a new one, seems the dealers are dealing right now.
