Sahara or Rubicon
 
The idea of a new Jeep is being toyed with... Couple of questions for all you JK owners. I do some light off-roading once in a while no crawling (don't like rocks) but am looking to do camp jeep and stuff like that so I would like to be able to be equipped when i need it. My question is how good is the sahara off road?? I love the sahara but would like the lockers. Just curious to see how well it performs off road and in snowy conditions... Thanks!:wavey:

you can get a sahara with lockers i like the sahara better cause of the inside and i dont do rock crawling but the one im looking at has dana 44 rear and lockers

I had both the Sahara and the Rubi in an 08. Chrysler bought the Sahara back and I have to say I like the Rubi hands down both inside and out. The Rubi is my dream machine and I plan on owning it for a long time to come. Right now having fun with it on the back roads of NH. I'm the business manager at a boy scout camp and have been putting it through its paces both in camp an in town. I love driving it both on road and off. Can't say enough about it. Pure fun.

Probably the axle lockers and sway bar release.

I had both a Sahara and a Rubi 08 and the Sahara had neither but the Rubi has both. You would know because of the two controls located in the center of the dash down low one labelled appropriately for the axle locks and the other for the sway bar release. Pushing them while in the correct gearing will result in indicators on the dash showing the condition of the controls.

Lift up it's skirt. No seriously, just look under the front. you'll see the disco bars on the Rubicon.

The 2 Saharas we've owned do fine offroad and great in snow.
If you can afford the Rubicon it will be better but the Sahara is no slouch

good to know the one i got has the upgrade gears and dana 44 so its better then the stock sahara too i would think haha

98TJ... I see a lot of threads here supporting the Rubi. And I agree, for what it was designed for, it's an exceptional vehicle. However, if you own a Jeep and it's on the trail maybe 10% of the time, the Rubi is overkill.
I bought the Sahara for a few reasons. I felt that I would never take advantage of the Rubi's capabilities here in Central Ohio. I liked the extra niceties that the Sahara offered over the other Wranglers. Call me soft, not hardcore, etc... I could care less. It is more than capable for the off-road (but I did upgrade the mediocre OEM tires in favor of MT's) and I am looking forward to some fun in the snow.
If your mold fits mine, you'll love the Sahara. If you are truly hardcore, the Rubi is the obvious choice.

You can't say anything bad about the Rubicon, but if you will never do more than light off roading you are spending a lot of money for equipment you will likely never need. If money is no object - easy choice - go for the Rubi. As several people have said, the Sahara (or an X) will do just fine in most non-hardcore offroad situations.

The local dealer mentioned to us that the Rubi's move quickly and as a result don't get the discount of other models. Gotta love the free market - supply & demand.

Thanks again to all who responded. I currently have a 98 4.0L with open diffs and i hate in the winter and offroad slipping like its my job. A friend had a 99 sahara with the lsd rear in it and that thing walked everywhere. Like I mentioned before I enjoy off roading and such but this will be a DD. If i was buying a weekend toy hands down i would take a rubi in a heartbeat. My main concern was just how well it will handle typical stuff seen in daily driving. As mentioned I think in my situation the rubi is a little overkill (not that overkill is a bad thing in the Jeep world):) I appreciate the help everyone!!!

Perhaps the 98 will become my weekend toy.......hmmmmm

TJ Rubi's have a rear LSD in addition to the locker. Pretty sure it's the same story with JK's.

Lockers, discos, and superior crawl box.
I'd still regear a Rubicon for larger tires, but it's a better start.

The JK rubi has actuated disconnects for the front sway bar.

So, if you want to disconnect the sway bar for more articulation you just have to hit a switch instead of getting out and manually disconnecting them.

Very well said. :) To that last point, I would imagine that a Rubi would also offer better resale value over the long haul, so if you can afford/justify it, I would certainly get a Rubi. All things being equal, if the extras will be wasted due to lack of offroad use, then just get an X or Sahara. It is a hefty surcharge for just a decal. ;) Good luck with your purchase.

Very, very wise. If you will ever go offroad, the OEM Wrangler tires are completely indadequate. We got the dealer to replace all 5 32" tires on our X with BFG KM's.

Not only are they better offroad tires that still perform reasonably well on pavement - they just look a whole lot better. The Wranglers look like they belong on a soccer momobile.
