intake restrictor(free mod)

searched and found one old thread briefly mentioning this so i figured ide title this to be found easier.

In my 2.5's airbox there was a restrictor from the factory. removed it and revs easier and drives with a bit more power. If you are curious to see if you gain some free power try removing top of air filter housing and look in airbox outlet where hose to throttlebody connects to. there are two push tabs which will release the restrictor but i needed plyers to remove because it was real tight because there are orings holding it in.
good free mod

has anyone else done this? How do you feel it works?

Dare2BSquare 07-25-2009 02:08 PM

I did it on my yj, but I also installed a 4.0 throttle body on the 2.5 at the same time, so I'm not sure how much just the restrictor being taken out helped. I knew that I was going to feed some more air into the new tb, though.

dooder 07-25-2009 05:50 PM

yeah, i already have the 4.0 throttle body and freeer exhaust but even still felt a difference and heard a difference in the engines ability to rev under load.

stock barely would do 70 mph, currently can cruise all day long at 75-85 with ease nothing else done to my 2.5.

Coyote_94YJ 07-25-2009 06:05 PM

I remember doing it when I had the 4.0L in my jeep and I remember picking up a slight gain on my butt dyno.

wranglerYJnewb 02-21-2010 12:08 PM

does anyone have pictures of this because either mine was already removed or im not seeing it

89YJproject 02-21-2010 01:33 PM

^^^same, either it's not there or im reading somthing wrong...

Coyote_94YJ 02-21-2010 01:49 PM

It is a horn shaped device that is inside the piping for the air intake. It is black plastic like the rest of the intake. For me it was a PITA to get out.

89YJproject 02-21-2010 02:02 PM

then mine must be out because i took it off the top of the airbox off at the airbox, and at the throttle body and looked straight down the hose and there was nothing in there...

Coyote_94YJ 02-21-2010 02:07 PM

Is it the same diameter all the way through? The first few times I looked I couldn't tell because it looks like part of the intake. I can't remember on which side of the airbox it was on either so you might want to check both sides.

Coyote_94YJ 02-21-2010 02:49 PM

I guess not. That setup in the writeup didn't look quite like the one that used to be on my Jeep either. Dunno.

89YJproject 02-21-2010 02:50 PM

well thanks for the help anyway

i was just looking at that and i was wondering do you have to remove the side of the box? or can you just remove the air restrictor and get a power boost?

Coyote_94YJ 02-21-2010 03:17 PM

Just the restrictor is fine. I didn't do that other bit.

Jeep_Geek 02-21-2010 03:40 PM

I did it a while back and didn't feel any noticeable improvement.

thechink09 02-21-2010 03:44 PM

well i have a 4.0L do you guys think i will have any noticeable change if i do it?

Coyote_94YJ 02-21-2010 03:47 PM

I noticed a little on my 4.0L. It's free so it couldn't hurt.

MikeMTJ 02-21-2010 05:36 PM

Just did this on my 2.5L. It took about 10 minutes. You pretty much only need a flat head screw driver. Make sure you take the box out of the jeep, it makes it way easier to work on. After taking it out, I sat there reving my engine and it does make more noise. Nothing worth worrying about, unless that bothers you. My jeep is already noisy to begin with, but if this is going to give me a little better gas mileage then it's worth it to me.

Good luck!

thechink09 02-21-2010 05:40 PM

doing this will give you better gas mileage???

MikeMTJ 02-21-2010 05:41 PM

We aren't talkin' like 10 more mpg, but maybe a little bit more. Nothing crazy, but it's worth it. It's free....any free mod is nice...but they are pretty rare. Just ask my check book.

thechink09 02-21-2010 05:50 PM

i hear ya. free is always nice

Coyote_94YJ 02-21-2010 06:13 PM

Maybe 1-2mpg gain. Maybe.

NAVYCHIEF 02-21-2010 07:19 PM

i just took the restrictor out of mine. acceleration seems to be much smoother. thinking about putting a box fan at the air box intake to provide positive pressure to the intake. maybe even two. one in the airbox intake tube and one mointed to the outside front of the box.

yeah kina like that. i'll have to seal the box totally to keep the air from "leaking". the fans i got are from a trashed computer.....used to running all day long. if they burn up i'll just find some more heavy duty ones. the bit you sent me has the HP increase at 80hp. seems like a lot. it'll be fun to try. thanks for the info.

thechink09 02-21-2010 08:23 PM

yeah i really doubt that thing add 80 HP. when ever you try it out post about it. i would like to see if it does anything

NAVYCHIEF 02-21-2010 08:26 PM

will do.

yjkid95 02-21-2010 10:26 PM

After reading this i ran outside and opened up the hood. I took the air box out and in ten minutes it was back in i took out the horn shaped resitrictor which was in the hole in the front of the air box. It had two tabs on either side needed a flat head screw driver to pop it out. Then on the left side (the side facing the motor) there is a plastic plate thats riveted to the air box. I drilled out the four rivits and removed the plate. Next to make sure mud wouldnt get in i took old window screens and cut some of the mesh to the same size of the plate. There are actually 8 small holes where the mesh could be screwed into. So i used 8 drywall screws to screw the mesh in. Took it out for a test ride and it deffinetly has a little better acceleration and throttle response might be in my head but i noticed a difference.
