17 yr old need advice on purchase of jeep

I'm going to buy a 2001 jeep wrangler tj. It has 100,000 miles. It's an automatic, has a lift, 35 inch tires and a bodylift. It's also hardtop. He's asking 8900 for it. Do you think its a good deal? I'm only 17 and it will be my first car. I don't really know if thats a good price considering it has 100,000 miles. The tires are new and the ac was great. The engine is spotless clean. If you have any opinons please post. Thanks Sheldon

which engine? How tall is the body lift? Is is the tranny fluid pink or dark brown?

Sheldon Wisdom 07-25-2009 09:43 PM

It has 6 cylinder and I think it has 4 inch body lift but I didn't check the tranny fluid

6 is good, 4" body lift is bad. Jeeps prices are all over the place. Few things you need to decide:
1. do you like?
2. is it in better condition than others you have looked at?
3. Can you afford it?
4. Can you afford to fix it if something major busts in the first 3 mos?
5. have you thought about an XJ cherokee? half the price usually and will go off-road great.

I think the tallest body lift for a TJ is 3", which is really too tall.. and places stress on the bolts.

Thank you for helping me out

Sheldon Wisdom 07-25-2009 10:11 PM

I don't know I thought they were pretty tall though maybe it was 3 inch

Dont buy it body lifts sucky for off rd and im sure you want to take it off rd find one w a suspension lift.Keep looking I found a 97 TJ w 40,000 miles on it.That was my main goal 97 or newer you get coils instead of leaf springs.

Because they are utterly useless for anything other than fitting bigger tires under your wheelwells. Body lift is just that, and does nothing to aid your suspension in keeping the vehicle high enough to offroad effectively. Although the TJ is a superior offroad vehicle when it is completely stock, a lift would be more helpful on the suspension rather than the body.

It's got suspension lift I think it actually there skyjacker it's got both body lift and suspension

pretty nice looking jeep. Buy it and then ditch the body lift. Replace the 4 in with a 1 or 1.5 in. body lift.
When I bought my jeep I paid a pretty penny for the age but I also factored in the aftermarket things it already had that I would end up doing my self. I bought mine with 32 in tires, smitty built tube steps, red/black neoprene seatcovers and a brand new Sailcloth top. All of those things cost money.
Looks like the jeep your looking at has about 1k in tires, at least a few hundred in suspension and a nice bumper.

And btw 100k on the clock is not alot for the 4.0

hard to tell but I would say 2" body lift. Nice looking jeep. And major guess, pro comp lift perhaps.

As a off rd lift they do nothing for you.

Absoloutley nothing wrong w leaf springs I wanted coils for a smoother ride so that was my main search criteria just wanted to give some one an option that they might not have considered .

A combo of both is a great way to go especially if you have a SUSPENSION LIFT and want a little more.

Oh yeah :flipoff::D:flipoff:

jerryj 07-26-2009 12:31 PM

That is a nice looking jeep though. Good luck on your search;)

Nice looking Jeep. You should have tons of fun !!

wetzie 07-28-2009 11:01 AM

That is a noce looking Jeep but think about using some negotiation skills. The dealers will deduct for the mods reducing the sale price quite a bit. If you do not buy it he will be sitting on it for a long time waiting for someone who wants a modded Jeep. Just my opinion.

Looks good, why don't you look the price up on Kelly Blue Book or NADA prices that will give you an idea of what it is worth
