Which Ring and Pinion Gears do I need?
1997 Wrangler TJ 4.0.
Pricing out everything for my 35's and 4.5 inch lift.
Need to regear to 4.88.
I think I have a Dana 35 rear and Dana 30 front, correct?
What is a Dana 30 "short" that I am seeing on 4wheelparts?
Quality of Superior Axles pretty solid?
If you are not installing the gears yourself, don't buy them on your own and have a shop install them for you. If you did it that way, the shop will only warranty their labor and not the gears if something goes wrong afterwards. The gear dealer will blame the installer (whose fault problems normally are) and the installer will blame the gears and parts you provided.
If you do have a Dana 35c rear axle, I can't recommend 35" tires... especially after regearing the axles to the appropriate 4.88 ratio which will up the torque sent through the axle shafts. Dana 35c axles are getting iffy with 33" tires and 35" tires are almost a certain busted axle shaft on a tough trail.
If you want to run 35" tires, install a Super 35 kit into your Dana 35c which beefs up the axle shafts which will make it worthy of such a big tire. Superior Axle is the manufacturer of the true Super 35 kit. There are imitation Super 35 kits that I can't recommend for 35" tires.
To know for sure if you have a Dana 35c or the stronger more desireable Dana 44 rear axle, look at the rear axle's differential cover. If it has a perfectly oval shape with a black plastic snap-in cover in the lubricant fill hole, it's a Dana 35c. If the cover is more stop-sign shaped with a threaded steel plug in the lubricant fill hole, it's a Dana 44 which is fine for 35" tires as is.
For your front Dana 30 axle, just look for a "standard rotation" or "straight cut" ring & pinion gear. The wrong gears for your TJ's front Dana 30 that will not work are "reverse rotation" or "reverse cut".
Brand wise, can't go wrong with dana gears of course. Sup Ax makes good stuff too.
x2 the d35 with 4.88's and 35's is a time bomb.
if you do go with the d35 upgrade kits vs another axle, look into the axle truss as well..
I'm fully planning on doing the upgrade to 44's come fall. I just need a stop gap of a few months. Won't be seriously railing on it till then, but will be doing mostly city and some light trails.
The big trails come after the 44's, I know the timebomb worries and am not avoiding them.
But I gotta regear as a stopgap unless I put the whole project on hold till fall, which I don't want to do.
Was planning on doing the install myself for the gearing, so install and labor aren't a worry.
