rubiunlimited 09-01-2010 09:07 PM

no legal ones that i know of.... but that hasnt ever stopped me...

There are tons in Mass but they are closely gaurded/kept secret by off road clubs. Your best bet is to join a sanctioned off road club to gain access. I suggest northeastjeep.org since I am a member and love the community but there are quite a few out there.

RubiconRich 09-19-2010 09:31 PM

There are a few in RI try PatriotJeepers (formed 2002)
if you have 31" to 33" tires.

I've been given some great leads on places to take my TJ. One requires a season pass but it is supposed to be awesome. That is Ninigret Park. There are others in West Greenwich, Exeter etc. The first one I'm going to hit is accessible from a private neighborhood in the middle of nowhere and is an unknown entrance to Arcadia/Beach Pond. I'll post more as I get a chance to try them out for myself.

There are places in RI to go. like I allways say join a club. Most clubs
are $50 a year that's like $5 a run.

I don't know of any legal ones, but I go in Glocester. There's tons of trails out there and the police don't pay too much attenion.

Jp90Talon 06-28-2011 09:36 PM

I will be nice in this reply......WE DO NOT CONDONE ILLEGAL WHEELIN ! It is due to people like you that causes us to loose what little land we have left.

4Jeepn 07-03-2011 09:54 AM

As stated unless its a legal trail, don't post about it. Thanks.

JeepyTrey 07-08-2011 08:07 AM

Im pretty sure I know what road you are talking about. I live in the middle of arcadia park in exeter and see jeeps going by my house every weekend. Since I just bought mine last week I have not had a chance to join them yet though.

DerekK401 10-09-2011 07:59 AM

There is also many beautiful dirt roads through Arcadia. They are not technical whatsoever but still a nice drive on a sunny day. There are some parts that flood out nice after heavy rain that are fun to go through. If you do go be respectful of others on the roads as they are shared with hikers, bikers, and horses.

While I'm stuck in SoCAL for another year... you all are making me nervous about coming back east. Here is my morning run.

RubiconRich 10-15-2011 05:51 PM

If you want to 4wheel in new England you have to drive to W.Mass, and S.NH.

golden-eagle 11-30-2011 03:16 PM

yeah everytime i went off-roading its either cops, or someone saying you can't go here. There is legit nowhere is rhode island unless you join a club, or at least thats what i have heard

RubiconRich 12-15-2011 06:13 PM

Best bet is to join a Jeep club.

Top secret trail

I was looking for land for sale in Smithfield, and found an old paper road/trail. Very cool spot. legal, as it is a recorded road. Not paved, very rocky in spots. Took my FX4 F150 half way in and turned back.

take Rt116 to Reservior Rd prior to RT 295 overpass. Follow it just before a plat with newer homes. On the left will be a dirt path, unmarked. Google map it, its call Hanton City Road. In theory, it goes all the way to Rt7. It was used to access a home, but the home burned, many years ago.

Please give me some feedback on what you think. I will post more of these as I find them if everyone is interested.

Have fun!
Bud

RubiconRich 07-15-2012 12:44 PM

I took a look online at it. looks like someone is building a industrail park near there.

Rhodeislander 07-17-2012 02:37 PM

Hanton City rd

Hi,
Before it is a gravel pit area. The north is the fidelity financial complex. The trail,(Hanton City) is a town road. Just abandoned. Google map it and zoom in, you will see the trail, no trees.
Bud

shadowrcker 08-11-2012 06:36 AM

I live close to that and ive been down that trail many times before, not to bad of a trail. Rocky in spots and it can get muddy in the winter.

It leads to the old supposedly haunted Hanton City
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanton_City,_Rhode_Island).
Watch out for pedestrians, ive ran into many people in the summer walking the trail or going to see the remnants of the city.

*Also as far as it being legal, i don't know on the legality of the road but the trials that branch off of the road and the surrounding land belongs to The Dow Chemical Company.

*Update
As far as legality goes:

The the trail you see on google earth is not Hanton City Road, its actually an easement used for a gas pipleline. According to the state of RI it is illegal to drive on.
The actual road itself is the thin clearing of trees that you can barely make out above the clearing you see on google earth.
In addition all of the trails branching off Hanton City Road are private property and also illegal to drive on.

I'm not trying to be a pain in the @$$ here but the State has the right to shut down the road and i rather not see a trail so close to my home shut down because of irresponsible roaders.

I'm attaching an image so its easier to see what im talking about.

All of this information can be found on the Smithfield RI website.

hello all
what's with the round headlight comment i have 90 yj with square and it's a 4 cyl but it's still a jeep with 33's i guess it's a yj thing not caring about round headlights if so we would all have cj's ?
any way the legal trails ie roads are still around but located on the western side of RI and the cops can't keep you off them i spent many years on the road doing service calls where the address was a dirt road with a pole number some over the years have become paved in part. some in the more restricted scituate reservoir have been closed but parts are still open. this was as a result of a few who trashed the areas either with their 4 wheelers or dirt bikes that caused people who live near by to complain hence all done no longer available all it takes is a few to ruin it for the rest of us. these roads while not rock climbing roads can be slippery when wet and beautiful. i not into rock climbing not to nock i just don't want to break my jeep so it depends what you want and please be respectful as a forum member said ilegal runs just give us a bad name and less access
